ELIZABETH, N.J. – A landlord in New Jersey is facing more than three dozen sex related charges for demanding sexual favors from 30 low-income tenants in exchange for housing assistance, according to prosecutors.

The Union County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday slapped Mountainside resident Joseph Centanni with a 42-count indictment. The litany of charges include 23 counts of second-degree sexual assault and 19 counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, the prosecutor’s Office said, according to the New York Post.

Centanni, 75, owned 18 low-income residential rental properties in the city of Elizabeth. They ranged from four to 100 units. He is accused of bribing women as well as men ages 22 to 61 to engage in unwanted sexual favors. The crimes charged took place from 2013 to 2020.

“The defendant allegedly solicited the sex acts from his victims as a quid pro quo, agreeing to offer them rent reductions, a delay in an eviction, or other forms of financial assistance in exchange,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

“He also purportedly threatened tenants who hesitated or refused his advances with eviction or other retaliatory measures.”

The creepy landlord was arrested in June 2021 but is currently out of custody on court-ordered pretrial monitoring.

Last year, Centanni agreed to pay $4.5 million to resolve a Fair Housing Act lawsuit that sought to protect tenants from harassment and discrimination, according to the Justice Department, the New York Post reported in December 2021.

Hence, Centanni sold all of his properties as part of the settlement. Moreover, he has been permanently banned from owning or managing residential properties, although he did not acknowledge wrongdoing when the suit was settled.

According to the lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice in 2020, Centanni subjected residents and prospective tenants to “severe or pervasive sexual harassment.”

The Post reported that Centanni allegedly touched tenants inappropriately and without their consent or required oral sex in exchange for rental assistance and remaining in their homes.

Centanni’s properties qualified for federal Section 8 housing vouchers, which netted him more than $100,000 in Housing Choice Voucher payments every month.

The $4.5 million he has agreed to pay is the largest monetary settlement the DOJ has ever obtained in a case involving sexual harassment in housing. The monies will be distributed to his victims through a compensation fund, according to DOJ.

unbelievable... what a goof and what tenants would do it... and for 7 years?! Sheesh

I mean, he's 75 and facing a ton of charges -- and yet likely sitting on millions? Seriously, this guy doesn't have a lot of options here. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he took off to Belize or something.

Yeah, this is not what the people above make it out to be: people trading favors to get a part and getting exactly what they "agreed to."

In NY, he was found guilty of rape and a criminal sexual act in the 1st degree.

In CA, he was convicted of rape, forced oral copulation, and 3rd degree sexual misconduct.

This is not "regret rape" like you are saying above. Sheesh.

And Don is correct, Stormy Daniels did not accuse Trump of rape. It was R Jean Carroll that accused him of rape. (She's the one that Trump said he was sure he had never even met until a photo of them together was published.) Most of the other 25 women accused him of things less than "rape" in other forms of sexual harassment.

But, yes, you are correct -- Daniels did not accuse him of rape and said it was consensual when Trump cheated on his wife with her... So, that one wasn't rape. Just him being a bad husband. :)

Don, he was not convicted of anything regarding the woman in the transcript. He was convicted of rape for other woman. In fact, the transcript woman never accused him of rape.

Don, maybe you could look a it that way. What i saw was a man who pushed and unless someone was very very strong and able to resist...he frequently moved forward (AS HE ADMITTED ON THE TRANSCRIPT ..." ).

Unwanted touch of breasts is sexual assault...which he admits to doing "all the time" in the tape :

Laura & John, it appears you may be looking for what you already pre-concluded. I dislike Weinstein strongly too, the guy is a complete creep and jerk. And yes, a criminal. But while this particular transcript does appear to show him guilty of assault (breast touch) but also that he was used to "helping" actors advance thier career in exchange for sexual favors.

That is creepy as hell, ethically bankrupt, and the assault is indeed a criminal offense. But, nothing here to me implies rape. Not saying he is innocent of that in other cases, but we need to be absolutely clear about the definition and not get things mixed up. I am not defending him, or Trump (strongly dislike both men) but betraying ones wife & family or making sex a transaction is not rape. We must be clear.

As far as this original idea: how anyone could want to have sex with tenant is far beyond me. Just idiotic. So many reasons not to, including moral but also financial and from a risk mgt view. You have liability ins, or LLC to protect your future then leave a huge hole for future issues because you can't take care of y

It's simply not worth a few seconds of release. Find a person you can love, start a relationship. As someone else said, cheaper to fly to Vegas! (Though equally as desperate). How bout be a good human to star with. Learn to care about people, quit trying to impress or relying on power and money (which makes love & friendships transactional thus fake) and if you can naturally and truly care for others, you make friends and become more attractive. Paying for sex is ridiculous notion. If you give as much as you get and make sure your partner is satisfied, guess what - your physical attention will be wanted. That's it.

But, let's also not pretend there aren't humans out there who use their good looks as a tool to get things they didnt work for and probably don't deserve. Their transactional outlook is just as bankrupt. Especially when they initially "consent", try to manipulate things, then later call it something else.

Happy New Year to everyone. Hopefully we can continue improving things. Get rid of the Weinsteins and Trumps, water down thier power, put them away criminally if proof exists. But also make non lawbreaking behavior that's morally bankrupt a bad path and socially boycot, but not cancel culture upon accusation without proof! And hopefully, women, men and all humans who are used to using sex as a transactional tool or weapon will also be socially boycot (hello ts almost 2023 they are not simply victims if they attempt to play this game).
