I was just notified by a tenant last evening that she was hearing scratching in the batrhroom (lower of upper/lower) by the exhaust fan. She said she tapped on the ceiling and it made some kind of noise. This was around 8:00 p.m. CST so it was already dark out. She also sent me a text this morning around 7:00 a.m. CST and said she heard it again. I, myself have had raccoons in my attic and from what I've read, they are active at night, whereas squirrels are more active during the day. Maybe it is some other kind of creature. Several years ago, I believe I had raccoons in the attic of this duplex. I hired someone to put a heavy duty cage over one of the attic roof vents to prevent them from coming in and haven't had an issue since. However, this year alone, I have had to have the roofer go over and replace some shingles. I'm wondering if the missing shingles were damage from a raccoon and not just them randomly blowing off. The noise she is hearing now seems to be between the upper and lower (at least to the best of my knowledge). --104.231.xxx.xxx |

I think I figured it out. I was over there this morning and took a look at the bathroom exhaust fan from the outside, and there is no cover on the exhaust pipe. So, I'm sure they are getting in somehow that way, whatever it is. Scheduled the handyman to come over this afternoon and take a look at it.

Just to give you another ‘tool’ for dealing with critters, Crown Hardware and Plumbing down on 3rd St sells some critter deterrent caulk. The caulk stays goopy, and furry critters don’t like getting it on their fur.
When I had a house reroofed after squirrels had overwintered in there, the buggers immediately tried getting back in, began chewing on the brand new fascia boards as soon as roofer left. I ran down to Crown, got a bunch of that caulk, and spread it on scrap boards, then laid those where the varmint was chewing. Kept the critter away from roof, then I was able to trap him in garage.
Yes, we did check to make sure there were NO BABIES in the attic, before proceeding with the roof. Marcia, glad you found them now, while we still have good wrather for repairs, and no risk of babies in attic. --172.56.xx.xxx |

Thanks for the tip on the caulk Busy. I never would have thought about that, but that is a great idea. Do you know if it can purchased anywhere else besides Crown?
