Hi,
The shower valve is leaking. My handyman wanted to replace the entire valve (make a hole on the other side of the shower stall, disconnect the copper pipes, etc). I think it's easier to just replace the plastic cartridge inside. The valve wasn't old. We just installed it 8 years ago when the bathroom was remodeled. However I didn't save the box. So I don't know the model name/number. All I know is that it's Moen brand. What's the best place to get the replacement cartridge?

Go to the Moen website and it's easy to look up the style, Hopefully you have a picture of it.
There are only a few common sizes of the replacement cartridges, I will often just buy them all and return the ones not needed. You'll best to use the or buy the special tool needed to pull the cartridges, I did years ago, still using it. And yes I agree with you on the work and expenses that is not needed in most cases. Moen has 1 type of the most popular replacement cartridge. It come is Plastic or in Brass. You can watch a YouTube videos online to see the type of cartridge and how to replace it.
The only thing you need to know is you can install it backwards so the cold is not hot and the hot is cold. To fix that, you rotate the center part of the cartridge 180 degrees before you secure the handle that has stops on it so it can't be rotated all the way around.
Moen stems/cartridges can cost only $10, up to around $35. The pulling tool cost under $20. You should learn how to replace it yourself. Good luck. --47.156.xx.xx |

The older Moen is has C clip where it easy to replace where the newer type uses a ceramic cartridge. View some videos on You Tube on the process of removing cartridge where put a towel when C clip is pulled out as will require to install new cartridge. Here the local Hd will supply a cartridge at no charge where can buy a second new cartridge so the next time can replace. It always better to standardize all the faucets then keep a repair kit to replace parts where having different brands makes that difficult. Ceramic disc are the least amount of problems where Moen has switched to ceramic disc where Moen has dropped the lower builders grade of faucets where was not able to compete with the junk no name from China. --68.69.xxx.xxx |

AND, make sure you spread a towel over the tub drain before taking anything apart.The plumber that showed me how to change a cartridge said that was most important step. Lose a screw for the cover plate down that drain makes a twenty minute job into twice that. --70.92.xxx.xxx |

I have had the same issue in the past.
I just completed a small touch up on an empty where I had to take the cover plates off in the bathroom. Dropped a screw in the sink.... fortunately I had already installed a screen in there so didn't have to start removing pipes to get it back.

Moen will send you a free cartridge, but they can be pretty slow about it. The last free part I got from them (kitchen sink sprayer hose) was free, but it took over a month for them to send it to me.

not a very handy handyman. in my world plumbers plumb, electricians electrificate, painters paint. the chance that a valve body has failed in 8 years is ultra low. a cartridge is fast and easy to swap in...robert has you halfway there already. --75.80.xx.xx |
