So I took a trip pretty much cross-country and I couldn't believe all the signs posted apologizing for very small amount of help just about everywhere. So what are so many people doing for money? Are so many people being subsidized that they don't have to work anymore? If so, is there an end to this? What are people doing for money? Are they being handed money from the government? If so is there a sunset to this legislation? --45.14.xxx.xx

The situation here is that the relaxed rules for UI people are reluctant to go out to find work even though there are jobs out there. One major donuts shops closed down night operations as they unable to find people to work night shift. Some employers like the grocery are constantly turning over staff where the cashiers and other help in a constant rotation. The first part of economic recovery is changing the UI rules like there were before the pandemic where people would have to find work even if that not best position to build up UI benefits again. There are a lot of able bodied people who are on social assistanc who should work. Here unemployment is at historic low where if willing to drive a transit bus there are positions avalable with good pay, security and benefits. If was not provincial Liberals who cancelled workfare where the previous Conservative provincial government cut welfare numbers in half. A lot of businesses can not expand as they unable to get help. --68.69.xxx.xxx

I agree with Homer on this. Around here in northern Michigan there are lots of people doing their own thing. They are tired of low pay, little or no benefits, poor working hours, and especially of government telling them they have no right to work, shutting down their businesses or employers trying to force them to get shots or get laid off. So they go to work for themselves.

I think this is going to become the normal thing for more and more people, especially those who are not in fields where they are "captive" to employers, like education, medical or government jobs. --24.180.xx.xx

If you keep your reported income low enough (i.e. under the table, cash only), you can qualify for a host of Govt goodies. Enough to supplement with 10-15 hours of work on your own hustle and live reasonably okay with few duties and responsibilities.

I have heard several politicians proposing UBI (Universal Basic Income) to ensure everyone a "basic level" of survival. If that ever happens, I'm guessing we'll see most entry level jobs disappear and many businesses we know fail because they can't afford to pay someone $20/hour to get off their duff and flop Whoppers. No worries here as I'm not a Whopper fan, but I would miss some of the other nice little places. I learned to work for $3.35/hour. Probably some here who did for far less.

And of course, the inevitable inflation which will quickly devour that first $1000. And the mounting national debt as we spiral into hyperinflation.

I guess what has baffled me is how quickly it changed. I understand some of the answers here of why but I still wonder how some people are making enough money to live well. I've also read that when it's talked about full employment that doesn't really give you an accurate number on that because after a point when people stop looking for work they are no longer counted.

So I used to be able to hire people but now find the don't even return my calls anymore. I talked to a few of my service people that I've used in the past and they used to have a couple of employees to help them and now it's just them. They are apparently working pretty hard and maybe doing better as they are charging more and not having to pay their workers, I don't know.

I've talked other property owners and other landlords and they are telling me the same thing. --45.14.xxx.xx

Robin, heh, no disagreements! Although, to be accurate, that's not UNIVERSAL basic income, which even billionaires would get (and ignore). But yes...anyone who can convince a doctor to sign the right piece of paper can general get a basic level existence our ancestors would envy and allows one to live a life of ease, if not of extravagance. Plenty of day time TV and internet to while away the hours....

potter, I have a theory on your observation about people having enough money to live well. Many of our social safety net laws were written when it was assumed a two person (married) household would need X but they also provided for singles. Those laws haven't been updated, so now it's simple: you find a roomie / fiancé / live-in-BF/GF/FF (friend friend, since gender and sex is so fluid these days... *wink) and simply don't report that person as living with you. Now you have two sets of bennies that were designed to provide for two SEPARATE households, but only one rent and utility payment.

I see this with some of our lower grade applicants who fill out they have $X for "household" income. When that wasn't enough, I would send a "I'm sorry but you fall below our minimum income limit", then I'd get a "Oh but my boyfriend will be here too and he gets $Y. Does he have to be on the lease?"

This is why I stopped responding to the patently unqualified. Anyone comfy with gaming the system and attempting to game me (or who isn't competent enough to understand what 'household income' means) isn't going to be a good tenant for me. I just delete those pre-screens and move on.

Base SSI is $800... times 2 people = $1600... plus add in various Govt programs, Section 8, food stamps, free phones, utility assistance etc and two unmarried people can get up to $3000 - $4000 worth of taxpayer bennies fairly quickly even in my relatively low cost of living area.

These shack up living arrangements have little to no commitment to anything long term, and once one "partners" starts bringing other sleeping partners around and/or doing drugs and/or drinking up all the free cash flow, then they split, the household finances implode, they get evicted, go to live in a hotel for a few months, then get tired of living next to folks like themselves who are up all night raising heck and partying.... so they decide to ask the every "private" land lord for "a chance to get a fresh start....work with me on the deposit.... I'm getting a job soon."

You've heard all this. I'm just recording it for posterity. *grins I'm not saying it works precisely this way every time, but often enough these are common elements I see.

Why go to college and spend 4 years just to earn $50,000 / year when you can just fill out the right papers and keep your living situation private and disposable?

part of the problem is the success that app companies like uber and door dash have had in saying that workers are not employees so they are essentially getting paid by the piece. Layer on top of that the move by employers (think McDonalds) to push workers below 30 hr/wk to avoid paying health benefits, layer on top of that the previous corporate elimination of pension plans. In my mind this lead to the dejected population. Why try hard when everything is stacked against them? Throw in the pandemic lens where people reevaluated what work means in their life (very little) and you have less participation. Now ice that cake w/ govt handouts and you have what we see now. --24.194.xxx.xx

Huge shortage of workers here. It's actually much worse than the statistics show. Plenty of businesses want to expand and open additional outlets but they know they can't get workers so those are hidden job openings that never get counted.

I was in NYC recently and the streets are busy with mostly adult males on e-bikes zipping up and down the streets delivering for Uber eats, Door Dash, etc. Lots of lazy people with money who are willing to pay for delivery services and plenty of workers willing to do gig work delivery. --68.46.xx.xxx

If we had a decent immigration policy - where workers could register to work and receive worker cards and pay federal and state taxes (but not pay for benefits they will never receive, like SS and Medicare) - we could come closer to solving a lot of problems. --50.82.xxx.xxx

I disagree. It's built into our DNA to create and do. Work is mentioned in the Bible before the fall into sin. Work is what makes us feel a sense of accomplishment and contribution.

Have some folks convinced themselves of the lie that work is for suckers? Yep, no doubt, and these are often some of the most pitiable folks I've met. There are more every day, but there are also many who strive and achieve. It's why I will never fully retire: I'll always have something to do to add value to this world, and my goal is to add more to it than I take out of it.
