Ken mentioned that I try FB so I was checking out the competition and found someone had poached my listing and put their phone# in my pics, AARGH! I reported her profile as spam but does that have any teeth? It says the listing has been up for 2 days. --24.194.xxx.xx

Same thing happened to me, I just let people know “it’s been brought to our attention that our listing has been hijacked. Nobody affiliated with this property will ask for money prior to an in-person showing”.

When I flagged the item as “stolen” it made it disappear. I don’t know if it was a fluke or not. --172.58.xxx.xx

I gave up on FB. Nothing but dregs with attitude/flagging my ad as a scam because I SCREEN HEAVILY. I have a listing with apartments.com and a paid ad with rentals.com. I am using craigslist and so far (knock on wood) that has been pretty good.

Now if I can only stop the parade of criminal applicants who routinely spit on cops/correction officers/theft/stalking/harassment/DV, you name it. --72.0.xxx.xx

Happens all the time where I live too. Last time someone brought it to my attention was a neighbor next door to our rental who said he saw some guy walking around in the back yard trying to figure out how to climb in through a window. Yes, there are apparently people so foolish (or desperate?) that they believe the owner of a property will make them break in through the back of the house to view a place.... AFTER they send them a non-refundable application fee of $80 or so through a method like Zelle or Paypal using the "Family/Friends" payment method so it can't be clawed back.

It's impossible to fight them all, so we just put a paper on the front and back doors saying, "No one affiliated with our company will ask you for any money or fees before you tour this property. If you paid someone a fee to view this property, it was a scammer who stole our pictures and created a fake ad. We cannot issue any refunds since that wasn't us. You might try reporting it to Facebook and see if they can do anything."

That's all you can really do. Again, people are ether foolish or desperate and do dumb things.

I see stuff on a few of the FB Marketplace groups I'm in where a scammer posts something like "Will pay $1500 a week to assemble candy boxes from home." or "$750 EBT cards are here. Claim yours by typing EBT below."

So many folks respond to those daily... it's a wonder these folks are still alive since apparently they will believe and/or respond to almost anything, even when the name of the poster is something like "Mahr Marh Vedonixius" (saw that one this morning). There truly are tens of thousands of gullible, desperate folks out there who probably need a guardian appointed to handle all their financial affairs.

I am so sorry to hear about the scams. S i d, thanks for the tip about putting up papers.

Facebook is notoriously famous for never ever responding to tech support questions, and it sounds like they're equally quiet toward submitted scam reports. --73.158.xxx.xxx

I posted a notice in the window. I'll keep it up for a few days, but shy away from for rent signs and anything that shows passerby's there is a vacancy. --24.194.xxx.xx

I haven't had a vacancy in 2 years, so I had no idea it was so bad. Thanks for the heads up. I have always watermarked my photos but now it sounds like I need to give advice too. I really dislike these scammers. Idk how they can live with themselves. --73.229.xx.xx
