I just did the first change of a water heater anode in a 40 gallon electric unit. Normally these require 3 linebackers, a breaker bar, and cheater pipe. I used a Harbor Freight electric impact gun and impact socket and skinny me. Done in 30 minutes and I work slowly.
Just passing this along in case it is helpful. --96.234.xxx.xx |

And you are not kidding! I would first spray on a lubricant designed to loosen stuck or rusted parts and let it set for a day. --47.156.xx.xx |

If you have a glass lined tank, an impact wrench can destroy it. The glass lining will crack in a million places and it will fail early. --216.218.xxx.xx |

That is good info Gevans. Hopefully the anode will corrode before the steel tank. When I change out a water heater, I cut open the old one with an angle grinder to see what it looks like. I will definitely cut this one when it fails.
Thanks

Robert,
I have seen some lubricant advertised on TV designed to loosen stuck or rusted parts such as above post.
Normally I would ignore the TV commercial but this one had me a little interested.
It is called Superzilla. Any experience with that??
What is your favorite for loosening stuck or rusted parts??

I've tried and tested a dozen different penetrating fluids and found the bang for the buck is Liquid Wrench penetrating fluids. They come in spray and fluid. Sometimes heating up the area first and giving it some taps with a hammer before applying the fluid helps.
Sometimes those addson "super" products are true. But in the case if found this to be most true is on expensive products like cobalt drill bits, drill extractor made of super hardened steel. You pay much more but get a superior product. The difference may only be 30%, but that will make this work. --47.156.xx.xx |

on the commercial products for rusted on parts I like liquid wrench and 'knock er loose'.
auto mechanics swear by auto transmission fluid and brake fluid -- who knew--
heating the rusted part with a torch will help expand and break the rust bond,...but let it cool back down and contract before trying to break it free.
ALWAYS rock it back and forth / clockwise and counterclockwise
to loosen it out and NOT SHEAR IT OFF.
SLOW AND EASY DOES IT .....PATIENCE --172.250.x.xx |

To inspect the anode turn off the supply line and remove the T-P valve - shine a flashlight in there to see what is left, plan accordingly.
