I know this is not exactly new. Companies have been using work from home WFH workers but now I see a new twist as the trend continues.

I have been told verbally by some local people that Cummins Diesel Engine Co (my city’s largest employer - 58,600 worldwide) is recruiting by saying you can work from home anywhere. No need to move when hired.

This means as people retire or leave there might not be a new person moving to town, buying or renting a home.

This also makes moving the jobs overseas very easy.

Companies will soon realize if you can work from 500 miles away someone rlse can also work from India (for a fraction of the going rate). --108.56.xxx.xx

Yup! First they moved the manufacturing jobs overseas. Now the other type jobs as well.

Work is always done where it can be done for less.

Robots are taking over repetitive type jobs and soon others as well.

I even read an article that proposed a robot tax on companies that used them because they were less costly than people. It proposed this robot tax would then be used to give money to people via some type of universal basic income scheme.(Of course, after the govt took their part out of it for "administration". --24.180.xx.xx

I've done remote work from home for almost 9 years now, way before Covid made it popular.

There are still some jobs that can't be done remotely...yet. Who knows how far the future will take us, though?

I don't fear the future. It's coming one way or another. We have to adapt to the changes.

The hand drawn cart gave way to the horse and wagon. The horse and wagon gave way to the automobile. The automobile gave rise to heavy construction machinery that displaced the ditch digger. Everyone wants progress and higher wages for doing work that is less physical. So, that tells me your best bet is to be in a job that must be on-site. Examples include trade work (electrician, plumber, welders, machinists), medicine, or go into technical specialties so you can live and work from anywhere.

My company's IT department has about 1000 employees. My sub-team has 9 people. Only four of us live in the same town as the headquarters where the IT dept supposedly exists. One lives close to FL (and is battening down the hatches), one is in Pennsylvania, one is an hour or so north of our town in Stockton, MO, one is East of town about 30 minutes, one is San Antonio, TX, and one is in Ohio.

I can easily see the day when our sub-team is in different countries. We recently acquired assets in Mexico, so part of our larger IT team is already there.
