Hi Robert,
I was at Costco recently and I noticed something that surprised me.
They were selling a 1.25 HP garbage disposal for about $100. I think it was from American Standard. Also it seemed unbelievably small for that much horsepower.
Normally I buy Insinkerator at the plumbing supply store. I get the Badger 5 for the apartments.
I am about to buy a garbage disposal for my home and I had planned to get a higher end Insinkerator.
Do you know anything about those small American Standard 1.25 HP at Costco??
I can hardly believe how small they are.

Check the RPM's. ISE disposals are slow at a lower RPM so this is the reason they last longer than most but do a so/so job. But other makers units turn faster and grind up waste better.
I was part of a "Test" of 10 disposals and provided useful information for an article printed over two years ago by a trade magazine.
Speed, warranty period and costs. --47.156.xx.xx |

So as to the size, any disadvantage other than maybe needing to put the items in disposal more slowly??
I suppose that could be annoying needing to spend more time slowly adding stuff into the disposal.

Yes with the ISE you can't fill the disposal and then turn it on without it getting stuck at some point. Other units that move at over 1000 RPM's faster, can turn on and grind up a storm.
ISE have the hex hole in the bottom to spin them to break free of stoppages. --47.156.xx.xx |

Why does anyone need a garbage disposal? --73.113.xxx.xxx |

The world of shopping is changing. Costco used to sell excellent stuff at a decent price. Now you have to know what you are looking at and how much it should cost. They still sell some excellent stuff at a decent price, but now they also sell some ordinary stuff at higher than it costs elsewhere. They also occasionally sell substandard stuff.
You can no longer just automatically assume it is a great product at a great price. --76.178.xxx.xxx |

Is here a minimum RPM I should expect to avoid problems more than the norm for each of the following: 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, 1 HP ???

2600 RPM is good, as opposed to 1725 the InSinkErator have. --47.156.xx.xx |

Do you know of any disposal manufacturers that do have 2600 RPM??

Yes. Many. Such as:
Waste King, 2600-2800 RPM's depending on different models. Consumer Reports Listed curtain models years ago way better than ISE in reliability, dependability and better price. --47.156.xx.xx |
