I have some deck boards on a small porch (should have used tongue and groove) and water is getting between the boards and coming in the basement. Outside of replacing, what I can do to prevent this? Can I use some sort of caulk between the boards?

IMO that ship has sailed 7 this issue should have been address when the deck was built.

However, you might be able to make some sort of modified under deck drain system to re direct the water outdoors. Checkout some of these videos for ideas on how to do it. ://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=under+deck+drain+systems&FORM=HDRSC3 --71.184.xxx.xxx

Thanks Steve. Looks like I need to pull the boards up and install the drainage system. --209.122.xx.xxx

Remove boards then install a thick piece of pressure treated plywood then install a Schluter drainage system where first the waterproof barrier then the drainage channels then over the Schluter membrane install a good quality porcelain tile where porcelain tile can be outside where temperatures go below freezing. The porcelain tiles should have a grain where only use floor type porcelain tiles. View some videos You Tube on the Schluter balcony drainage systems where will expensive upfront but a long lasting solution. Water damage can cause a lot of problems in the future where freezing can cause significant damage. Balconies and a porch will last a long time when a drainage system is installed. --68.69.xxx.xxx

Can you add a roof over the decK? They actually make systems for under decks to redirect the water, they look like the wavy plastic sheets that you seen in HomeDepot. --172.58.xxx.xxx

The roof is a good idea, this happens often in novice construction projects - nothing is waterproof so water by nature finds a way in. A deck is basically a boat that requires a lot of maintenance and you never get to enjoy it on the lake or river cruise. --76.190.xxx.xxx

A rich client with a expensive home wanted to build a wooden deck on a 1st level roof top so from the master bedroom on the 2nd floor, he'd have a place to sip coffee and read the morning paper. Life if a sub billionaire.

I told him I could do it but had to re-do the roof because water was going between the roofing deck and it needed to drain, and open up to be cleaned out.

So I got the job to do a small side deck. I pitched the roof and installed tracks so the wood deck could be removed in sections -- because of water, dirt and leaves would build up after time.

He paid too much for a deck, but since it had 2'x2' sections that pulled out and the underneath roof could be swept of hosed down.

He got another contractor to do the main larger section, not re-roofed, no track system and the deck was not designed to be removed.

When he went to sell the house, to buy a larger one, the inspector said the roof under the large deck started to rot out and the decking had dry rot. So the $40,000 he spent for the large deck had to be redone, but my smaller section was fine after 7 years of perfect service. --47.156.xx.xx

There are different deck covers which are less expensive I believe one was called Dura Deck where it is a single membrane. Would only recommend installing on a pressure treated plywood. A lot depends on budget where the Schluter system is much better as there are drainage channels. With more rain that is going to put a strain on existing decks as rainfall is increased on the east coast. --68.69.xxx.xxx

you see solid surfaced membrane decks in shore communities. they must be coated ply. maybe WMH will have a spec. then you could ply over your deck and be good to go. --100.38.xx.xxx

Years ago, I had a friend who owned a boat yard. Together we did a few roof / decks that had fiberglass as their finished surface. Other than normal cleaning & an occasional coat of fresh paint they required no maintenance. At least one of them is still performing as designed 45+ years later.

The key to any low slope roof or deck over a finished area is to have excellent drainage & the ability to clean the area under the deck. --71.184.xxx.xxx

-There's a roof over the porch but it's up about 9 to 10 feet with the sides to the porch completely open. It's actually not a roof per se, but the floor of a inside roof right above it. I could probably divert the water putting up a sloped metal awning around the open area to divert the water. The area that's a problem is a trap door built in the deck to the basement, however, it's probably leaking in areas I can't see as there's a portion that covers a crawlspace that's not visible to me. --209.122.xx.xxx
