Landlords, my handman put new bulbs recently into my security lights in back lot on a timed sensor. They were working great, until yesterday we had a major rain storm, thunder, etc. The fixture is about 10 years old in of itself. I reset the fuse box as a test and still nothing. The handyman thinks it died and is asking to test it. However, I am thinking maybe when he put the new bulbs in, the electrical box might have separated somehow to let water in. Should I let him test it? Should I replace the fixture? The other exterior lights were working fine. Any input would be appreciated.

LED bulbs along with motion sensing fixture that is rated for outdoor use. Only use fixtures that have a CSA or UL rating as safety is the most important. Some outdoor fixtures already have LED built in where once burn out then fixture must be replaced. A lot of fixtures sold on Amazon and Ebay are not CSA or UL rated where not EU rated which should not be used. Once the fixture is removed then can check for power first where a VOM can be used. Also the box should be outdoor box where the fixture is mounted where indoor mounting box should never be used for outdoor fixtures as not waterproof. Installation is important for safe trouble free use. --68.69.xxx.xxx

Thanks Robert! Sounds like I will need to replace the fixture. --71.117.xxx.xx

I changed the bulb on my outdoor dusk to dawn sensor light and it failed to work. It was incandescent but I used LEDs. Found out it needed dimmable light bulbs. Worked fine then. Also a very old (20 year) fixture. --174.65.xxx.xx

Timed Sensor?

Either you have a dusk-to-dawn light fixture. Or a dusk-to-dawn with a motion sensor. Or just a light fixture on a timer.

But if you combine a motion sensor with a timer, switching the power on or off can set it into a different mode--always on or always off.

Also some motion sensors have three settings. Distance, sensitivity and length of time the light will stay on once tripped.

SO it could be power, bulbs, setting or the water could have blown something out.

I would test it or replace it. Trying different standard bulbs, not LED or Compact Florescent -- to see if it works. --47.156.xx.xx

I have had some fastened to a wall stop working after rain because it gets behind them after they vibrate loose. --71.188.xx.xxx

Time for a new fixture. The new LED and such are really nice. You'll be glad you updated! --172.56.xx.xx

Confusing term…you “reset” the fuse box? You can’t reset fuses. Are you saying the breaker tripped? If so, I’d looked for how the likely short happened. Is there moisture in the box when removed?

The internal circuitry can go sour from lightning, you have prolly had GFCI failures the same way. --76.190.xxx.xxx

Vee, yes, we had thunder and lightening on that day, and also had a GFCI failure that same day as well. Ally, that is what I think happened as well to mine, water must have gotten behind it. I am going to have my handyman just switch it to LED as Plenty suggested. Luckily, my neighbor security light in the back casts enough light to cover my area, but I will get this done soon. --71.117.xxx.xx
