Reading further, if passed, the hotels would be required to offer up any vacant rooms to the homeless. Business "as usual" except for vacant rooms... --75.11.xx.xx

The City get's paid a 10% sur tax on top of sales tax. Money for the homeless to pay the hotel bill comes from the State or Fed's. The City will tack on 25% or more for their take. This means a room that would go for $125 a night will be billed at a Sports Game Weekend at $350 per night, plus 10% hotel sur tax and 25% City money in their pocket fee. So a room is around $500 per night for the homeless.

When I had low income housing back in 1997-2000, I only got around $500 a month. They want that per day. Crooks. --47.156.xx.xx

If it's like any Govt "solution" ever proposed, it will cost 5 times as much as finding a market solution.

Thing is, there isn't really a solution to homelessness in many cases. There are shelters in my town that have empty beds each night because the folks don't want to lay off the drugs, drinking, or sex that the shelters do not allow. It wouldn't solve every homeless situation, but it would solve a lot of them.

Some homeless have mental illness. We used to take care of that with asylums, then the "compassionate" politicians decided it was wrong to institutionalize people (possibly true), and instead threw them out on the streets with no resources. Seems like we need to rethink that approach.

While the socialist here wanted to destroy the lower end of the rental market where they brought in rent control where the annual operating costs were increasing more than the allowed rent increases under rent control. So many of smaller rental housing providers sold out to very large corporations where they kicked everyone out than doubled or tripled the rent than they said there no longer any affordable housing. During the pandemic the rent free for all forced many smaller rental housing providers to sell where now most of rental housing is only owned by large corporations with deep pockets no matter what the cost it is kick out than that happens. There is not enough in the Ontario treasury to completely buy out all the rental housing in the province of Ontario so the socialist pipe dream of socialist housing can not be achieved now or anytime in the future. If there is universal medical care which takes over 50 per cent of provincial budget then where is the money going to come from. For the homeless there are problems of alcoholism, drug addition along with some have mental issues. Unless want to be completely socialist like Finland then high taxes will cover those large expenditures where some say this country is socialist where in reality not as socialist as most EU countries where some what more socialist then the Us as there is universal medical care here. The extended UI benefits are causing more people to stay home instead of going to look for a job. Unemployment is now at a historic low where those want to work can get a job. --68.69.xxx.xxx

I suppose this would be a great thing for a small mom and pop operator......the govt filling them up.

I try to steer away from these local independent operators and stay with nicer end franchises. Do I think the govt is going to house homeless in a Hilton for example? I am sure Hilton will have a special $400/night rate for that --24.101.xxx.xxx

The real issue is the condition of the rooms when they leave and who will be there.

Google, YouTube or TickToc homeless in Kensington, Baltimore, Portland. The photos will make most of us sick to our stomach to think folks actually live this way in the united states. Those folks certainly would accept (not necessarily appreciate) a nice soft, clean bed and shower ... but what will it cost the hotel to clean up after them.... and the folks they bring in with them ... and, truly, the disinfecting needed. There will be zero accountability. --98.237.xxx.xx

A more accurate description of homeless is "drunken bums" or tweekers. The reason they have to live on the street is they have pissed off their family from stealing from them to buy drugs (Rachelle H) or committing crimes and refuse to go to a shelter due to rules barring drugs or drinking. Do you want to go to a hotel filled with drunken tweekers looking to steal from you to buy more drugs??? LOL --174.65.x.xxx

Should be very interesting, if it goes through, to watch high end hotels establish ground rules to protect their properties with legal maneuvering. I would think they would need to have city on the hook for more than usual damages and turnover.

It would seem they could also use existence of nuisance from odors, etc to remove problem individuals. I cannot believe the city would be legally allowed to escape that liability.

Significant drop in regular customers would destroy that business and city would have to be on the hook for that. I think this is one situation where city has bit off more than they can chew.

The better solution is to put the public into public buildings like City Hall, Mayor's office, judge's chambers, empty jail cells and other government buildings at night when no one is using them. In the morning, they can leave. Virtually no cost to the taxpayer except the cost of cleaning out the smell! LOL --201.140.xxx.xx
