Our local Lowe's has a promotion through 8/28, along with Blue Rhino propane. For every old 20 lb. propane tank that is turned in (without getting a fresh tank), Lowe's will provide a $25 gift card rebate, good online or in store at Lowe's, and not just for propane. No kidding, this is good for up to 20 tanks!

The details are that you must provide a photo ID in order to prevent taking advantage of this more than once, the tanks must not be heavily rusted, and you are limited to 20 tanks (!).

So if you, like us, have some of those barbeque grill type 20# sized tanks hanging around that you don't want to recertify/refill, check with your local Lowe's to see if they are doing the Blue Rhino promotion. Easiest $75 rebate that I ever got, and sure beats the few cents per pound that the local metal recycle place pays! --98.114.xxx.xxx

Every time i buy a house to rehab i end up with 1 of those tanks,i give them away on craigslist just to get rid of them,i could have had 20 of them if i saved them.If they do it once they will do it again --74.77.xx.xx

I suspect that this is a supply chain thing - not enough new tanks being produced, so they try to get a lot of old ones to recertify and clean up in order to underfill (yup, they do) and stock at Lowe's and other places. --98.114.xxx.xxx

Wilma,

Thanks for the heads up!

Just a note to all LLs : these are used in meth making. The chemicals make the metal rot from the inside out. The metal could be paper thin and explode when jostled.

If the brass nozzle is corroded blue/green do not touch - call the police to check it out.

@ OregonWoodsmoke - we did bring one of the old style valves - the clerk never even went out to look at the tanks, just took my word for how many we brought on a busy Saturday. But my husband has read up a bit, and it is evidently easy for the recert process to change out the valve.

So my answer is - maybe. Check to see if your local Lowe's is even running this promotion with Blue Rhino, it may be regional. --98.114.xxx.xxx

@Brad(20,000) - thanks for the tip - I will make sure that my "hey, look what is on the side of the road" hubby knows that. --98.114.xxx.xxx

WILMA---The Lowes here in South Philly knew nothing about it. Can you post what town you saw this offer in? I have about 20 of these tanks that a tenant left and it would be worth it for me to drive across Penna. --73.141.xxx.xxx
