This is a new one for me. My tenant mentioned that his rent for last month had never cleared the bank and wondered if he needed to issue me another check.

I had deposited it and my bank never notified me about any bounced checks, so I called them and they checked and yes, I had deposited it and yes, it had cleared the bank, and yes, I had credit for it in my account.

His bank says the money is still in his account.

We figure that someone somewhere will notice that there has been a mistake and they will come for the money eventually.

There are still humans in banks and I guess that somewhere along the line someone pressed the wrong computer key? --76.178.xxx.xxx

It only takes one dollar to bounce a cheque where if the tenants bank will allow to certify check then see if there is sufficient funds then once certified the funds are removed from the account so in the end it depends on the bank. --68.69.xxx.xxx

Of course, the most likely case is that the tenant is confused and doesn't really know whether the check has cleared his account.

Hopefully you won't be getting one of those delayed notices that the check really is NSF but it took your bank forever to debit your account and notify you.

In the old days, I had a couple of NSF checks from tenants that my bank took about 10 days to let me know.

I had a check from a T go NSF-took 3 weeks. It was accepted by my bank for about a week before it bounced out. I was floored. Could not believe it took that long. We ended the tenancy and it didn't go well. The police had to be involved as T didn't believe me even though I sent a pic of the notice I received and it went through the Fraud dept of my bank making me believe it was written on closed account. Anyway, make sure T double checks their account and keep and eye on yours. --73.230.xxx.xx
