The furnace was working properly and I had it serviced by a co that I have used for 20 years. When he finished the work he told me he could not turn on the furnace and that I need a gas valve. This would cost 400 to 500 and the furnace was old.

The furnace had passed the inspection but would not go on.

A builder close by removed a newer working furnace and I thought that would solve the problem------ should I spend money on a gas valve for an old furnace????

How would you solve this furnace problem???? --107.4.x.xxx

400-500 for a valve?

I would get a second company to look at this. --24.180.xx.xx

As an landlord and contractor, I have around 100 gas valves in stock -- for units and clients when I sued to have a emergency repair company. If you look on the valve you should find the model number. Also you will need to know the input/output sizes and locations. Is this a millivolt control valve or a 24 volt? You can find New "Old Stock" on eBay. Or you can call a supply house and ask if they have any in stock.

If you locate a valve, new, used or repurposed, it should cost around $100-$200. Then you can have a plumber or tech install it for around $100.

Sometimes a valve will get stuck and using a voltage generator you can up the power/current to see if the valve comes on. --47.156.xx.xx

Another place to get a new valve is -supply house- dot com (yes that is the name) they are in Columbus, OH, the builder person should be able to help you fix your furnace much less than the other company. --76.190.xxx.xxx

Every gas valve has a make and part number where can order from heating supply company. Honeywell or White Rogers where can substitute for gas valve. Most furnaces use a 24 Vac gas valve where the furnace will have a transformer where power to gas valve should be checked out first. --68.69.xxx.xxx

I would think the repair is order providing the heat exchanger is alright.

If the heat exchanger is questionable shape - then it is time. 20 years though is about the half way point typically on a system --24.101.xxx.xxx
