I turned in a library book late and was charged 10cents per day late, for a book (on Landlording!) that retails $20.
So at that scale, for a property valued at $200,000 , the per date late fee should be $1000 per day!

My Ex hubby found 2 books when he was moving out and we went to the library to return them. The gal said it would be $600. for the fines (probably for 5 years worth) so we asked if we could just PAY for the books themselves. NO. Then she threatened to have us Arrested if we didn't hand over the books. I think the Ex finally negotiated the fines down to about $100. and by that time I was sitting in the car waiting for lights and sirens to drag me out. What a day. THE next week, the library had a 'bring back an overdue book for NO FEE amnesty day.' Duh. --174.65.xxx.xx |

I used to be a librarian in an urban area. I remember one time, there was this patron who asked me, "I really like this book. Can I buy it from you?" "No, but if you look online, I'm sure you can find a copy for sale. You might try (website), (website), or (website)." "If I happen to lose this book, how much will it cost me?" And I'm like, "Probably $50 or $60. You can buy it much cheaper." And she's like, "But it's just a teeny little book!" And I'm like, "Yes, there's the cost of the actual book, but then it has to be labeled, catalogued, and so on. So that's the part that's expensive."
Our library in our teeny little town doesn't charge late fees for late books, just for late movies.
The library in a nearby town charges, like, fifty cents a day or something. It adds up super-fast.
Most libraries in our area will have a ceiling, where after it hits a certain point ($20 or so), it will just transition to "replacement + processing costs", rather than infinite fines accumulating.
My late rent fee is 5% of all unpaid funds not received by the end of the second day after it's due. :) --137.118.xx.xxx |

my library joined the many others around it and got rid of late fees. now you pay after x days for a missing book. I should probably know the details since I'm a trustee.
