State Specific Question About: MARYLAND (MD)

The new made in China LED bulbs that were placed into 3 ceiling light fixtures glow after the lights are turned off.

This was only noticed when it got dark last night and the glow was substantial.

I didn’t want to have that much light at night so I took them out this morning and put back the bulbs I’d been using Before the PEPCO energy audit / improve energy efficiency contractor came 6/30/22. THIS IS MY RESIDENCE.

I realize the audit contractor uses the bulbs that the PEPCO audit program provides, "Simply Conserve" brand.

My house was built in 1951 so it is 71 yrs old. Is there a better quality brand/model of LED bulb that I could use/buy that will NOT have the afterglow when lights are turned off? I do like the point of saving electricity. It was my assumption that that afterglow would increase my electricity usage. Is that correct? Thanks --108.51.xxx.xxx

My LED lights will glow for about a second after being turned off. They use such a little bit of energy that it actually takes them a second to use up the power in the line. But then they are totally out. That's normal.

Are you saying yours keep glowing a long time / all night long? That's strange. Is it on a dimmer switch that i turned down but not off? --68.229.xxx.xxx

Is PEPCO your gas and electric provider and they sent the auditor at your request? Did you pay for those bulbs? It it's a NO and a YES, you may have been scammed. Energy auditors may recommend appliances or systems that actually cause problems like some furnaces which are 99 percent efficient, require piping for water condensation and I read they go bad faster. Don't believe all this energy nonsense. The Supreme Court yesterday, ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) may not rule on our energy use and make changes to how our energy is provided, such as shutting down coal fired plants. Twenty-five states sued the government. I predict our economy will now level off and get better and gas prices will begin to go down. Nobody knew how the current occupants of the White House would ruin our lives and freeze us. Now they can't. --108.24.xx.xx

PEPCO is who provided my electricity and the bulbs were free, provided by PEPCO's approved audit contractors. There is no dimmer switch on these ceiling light fixtures. The bulbs stay glowing/lit for all night and into the morning!

Also, How do I tell if my furnace is gas or electric? I have a picture but can't see how to add a pic to this post. It is a Carrier furnace, 22 yrs old, and I just got a Google Nest Thermoostat installed. This auditor/contractor asked me if my Furnace was gas or electric. I understood it was Gas but it has an on/off switch on it and this has always been a confusing matter of which kind of furnace I have. This auditor didn't go to the basement and look at the furnace, he just accepted that I said it was gas. IF I am wrong was the type of furnace I have IMPORTANT for the proper install of the Google Nest Thermostat?? Thanks --108.51.xxx.xxx

Any thermostat will control either type of furnace.

A gas furnace still needs electricity to operate the fan & (possibly) ignitor. It should have an emergency/service shut-off switch.

You can tell quickly by whether it has a gas line going into it. gas pipes are usually black (or grey) metal & are labeled with yellow & the word "gas", "propane", or "natural gas".

LED lights convert AC to direct current where for a few seconds the capacitors discharge then LED lights will go out. Energy conservation is not just about lighting but when high wattage appliances are replaced with natural gas then the electrical consumption drops considerably. A gas stove, gas clothes dryer and gas demand water heater will not using energy when off as newer appliances use glow bar or spark ignition. If the envelop of a building is improved then demand for heating and cooling is reduced as the amount of time the HVAC system operates is less along with the HVAC equipment will last much longer. Putting vents in rafters where heat is kept out of attic will keep the attic cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Most houses here use fiberglass insulation which over time develops air pockets then heat transfer is increased. Spray foam has least heat transfer along completely sealing out air. Triple plated windows with low E are going to become the norm here soon where windows have the greatest heat transfer compared to a well insulated wall. A net zero building does not require to be connected to the grid as power comes from solar panels. In the past insulation was minimal where heating, electrical costs were low. If walls are spray foamed then energy consumption will go down as well. --216.110.xxx.xxx

You probably have a small amount of current leaking through the switch controlling the LED. If the switch is a dimmer, or has a built-in night light, then have an electrician replace it with a basic single pole switch. --107.141.xx.xxx

I contacted the MD PEPCO Contractor who on June 30, 2022 did the replacement to these China LED bulbs AND also installed a NEST Thermostat Model E. Here is his reply: "When you typically see a glow from an LED bulb, it's due to the electrical current running through the lighting fixture. From my experience, most if not all brands of LEDs will have the glow effect when they are swapped out due to the electrical current.

You have a standard gas furnace - 80%. Please do not switch the switch to off as it will cut the power supply to your Nest thermostat." Now I have questions about the NEST thermostat!

I have been watching youtube videos on this NEST Thermostat model E so I can advance my full understanding of this digital device that I now own and need to learn about maintaining. This PEPCO approved contractor said I Didn't have to own a smartphone to have full operation/usage and at present I don't have a smartphone plan. I have FiOS internet and WiFi throughout my resident house.

In one of the videos it shows the full installation.

One of the steps was to enter the owners WiFi password to ensure that software updates are made into the thermostat. The PEPCO Contractor, never asked me for this. Did the Thermostat device synch automatically or is this a Must Do step outstanding?

To my understanding I now own a digital thermostat and it will need software updates.

I did just write the Contractor Office Operations man this: "Please either have Richard return to do this or send me the steps for this and I’ll assume I can follow and do this.

From the way this was presented in the video I watched on this exact Thermostat this is a critical step to ensure it is kept up to date and remains operational.

One of the unboxing videos showed that the Thermostat came with an installation guide enclosed. I always want any product guides for things in my house in the event something arises I have to address. Can you please send me that."

Hopefully someone here owns this GOOGLE Nest Model E and can better educate me. If it really is imperative I have a smartphone for usage let me know. I have zero need to be programming it away from home and really don't care much about the advanced features but DO want it to be kept current with software updates (I assume).

Thanks --108.51.xxx.xxx

A standard efficiency boiler or furnace has one heat exchanger where high efficiency boiler or furnace has two heat exchangers where the second heat exchanger is made out of stainless steel. A high efficiency boiler or furnace can be vented directly through the wall where no chimney is required where combustion air is taken from outside so the system operates as closed combustion where no air filtration as furnace does not take combustion air from outside. Here a standard efficiency gas furnace is no longer available where the minimum is 96.1 efficiency although a standard efficiency water heater is. If insulation is upgraded then the HVAC system can be downsized as the heat gain and heat loss is reduced. --216.110.xxx.xxx

Lots of LEDs glow when switched off (not just temporarily due to cap storage like some are talking about above). It can be due to low power still cycling through the fixture -- enough to trigger the LED driver. It can be a swapped neutral line in your wiring (which can be a dangerous issue), and it can also be parallel wiring close enough to bleed into the other wires.

In any case, it usually has nothing to do with the quality of the LEDs. So, this isn't a "China made LED" problem. It is either your fixtures or your wiring.

Is this old wiring? I recall one of my old wiring places having some stray currents. Enough that the fluke voltage detector would beep. Can you get a multimeter on the contacts and check for small stray currents?

You may want to check the wire connections inside the breaker box. (Neuetral & Ground bus and breakers) Also check the box grounding. --174.59.xxx.xxx

If the switch is off, electricity cannot flow unless something is wired wrong. Ours glow for about 1/2 second...that's it. You don't say how long they glow...but if more than a second or so, you need an electrician. Energy doesn't just flow randomly from thin air into a light bulb after it's turned off...either the wiring is bad or there is some sort of storage device in that bulb (such as a capacitor) that is bleeding electricity into the bulb to make it glow. Either way, something is wrong. --99.92.xxx.xxx

Sounds like a problem with the neutral side of the circuit. That would be a job for an electrician to troubleshoot, not a diy. --73.177.xxx.xx

Wasn't the HOME INSPECTION I PAID FOR AT POINT OF PURCHASE SUPPOSED TO HAVE CHECKED THE HOME WIRING? THE BULBS HAVE AN AFTERGLOW THAT NEVER WENT AWAY AFTER 14 HRS 'TIL I REMOVED THE NEW LED BULBS AND PUT BACK THE FORMER BULBS. SO MUCH FOR THESE ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS. NO ONE HAS SPOKEN ABOUT THE NEST THERMOSTAT THEY INSTALLED, MODEL E. THIS IS A DIGITAL THERMOSTAT AND OF COURSE HAS SOFTWARE UPGRADES. THE CONTRACTOR SENT MY MY UTILITY NEVER BOTHERED TO CONNECT THIS DEVICE TO MY NETWORK. I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH "TECH SUPPORT" IN The Philippines FOR 50 MIN AND FINALLY GOT THIS ADDED TO NETWORK. GEEZ THE CONTRACTORS IN MY AREA A NOT TRAINED ADEQUATELY AND UTILITY DOES NOT CARE. --108.51.xxx.xxx

Yes, the inspector should have caught it. You keep complaining about where the bulbs are made and "energy efficiency programs", but NEITHER of those are at fault here. The program has done exactly what it should do: detected that you have wiring problems that are leaking energy.

It sounds like you had a bad inspector and maybe bad contractors. That's not the fault of the LED bulbs nor any emergency programs nor your utility company.
