I was thinking about moving from NY to the Carolina, not sure North or South.

I am planning to go on vacation/business trip after Independence Day and check out myself.

Any one wants to meet for coffee?

Look like the weather is better, the ocean is warmer and the grass is greener ;)

Taxes is TEN times less than I am paying in NY. $1,200 instead of $12,000.

What am I missing?

Any ideas what places should I look for? --70.23.xxx.xx

There is a niche that has developed in the Carolinas. Catering to the overnight crowd. What are they? They are the folks who drive half way down to the south and then spend the night at the half way point - in the Carolinas.

Lots of folks also winter over down there but less than in Florida - so you are getting there at a good time --24.101.xxx.xxx

depends on if you are beach people or mountain people. do you like small towns or big towns. does not having access to curltural activities bother you? How do you feel about traffic? Are you older and feel the need to be near top notch medical or are you younger and healthy and that is not a concern? Do you like the busy night light or do you like peace and quiet? Lots of variables. --71.217.xxx.xx

We are older couple so decent hospital is more important than night clubs and schools. We like to walk in a safe neighborhood. Like when it’s quiet, but don’t mind to see a neighbors.

Pinehurst area is very retirement friendly especially if you like golf, but smaller town (unlike charlotte, raleigh, durham) --65.188.xxx.xxx

We live essentially on the Outer Banks. We are losing primary care physicians right and left: thousands of people without PCPs. Hospital has only 19 beds. For serious stuff you have to go to Virginia, not too bad it's 1.5 hours or less to good hospitals and doctors. We do have some cancer care here and there is a cancer center being built.

Not much night life, casual, spur of the moment walking definitely depends on neighborhood but we do have some very nice walking and multi-use paths that we drive to in order to ride our bikes.

A *lot* of traffic in the summer and restaurants are impossible to get into unless you like to dine at 4pm (which we actually don't mind - if we still went out to dinner which we don't.)

The mountains of NC are beautiful but I've never lived there so I don't know anything much about that area. NC is quite large geographically for an eastern state, takes hours & hours to drive from the coast to the mountains.

If you need an airport, Charlotte is a good area because their airport is a hub. Having lived for years near Dulles Airport which had direct flights going everywhere, it's hard to live near an airport where EVERYTHING is a connection through Charlotte or Atlanta...not that we are traveling these days (people too crazy, flights too unreliable.)

I hear South Carolina has some lovely cities. --50.82.xxx.xxx

WMH [NC], thank you for your response.

Is dangerous to be on the islands at the hurricane season? Do you need to live the area?

The other question: why doctors are leaving?!

Not enough patients?

Bonanza [NC], I will check Pinehurst, thank you. --174.206.xxx.xx

We are also considering NC as a retirement location some day. Check out suburbs of Raleigh...such as Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Cary, Chapel Hill, etc. These are some of the lowest crime areas in the country and tons of great hospitals/medicine due to the Duke University system and RTP (Research Triangle Park). One downside is that housing costs are high compared to Indiana...but if you're from NY they may actually be lower.

What I like about that area is..

a few hours from mountains

a few hours from beach

very minimal hurricane risk since you're so far inland

very low crime

lots of medical facilities

cost of living modest other than housing a bit high

tons of activities (college sports, festivals, etc.)

weather that is generally warmer year round than Indiana, but still has seasons. The only month that's really any hotter than Indiana is August, and only by a couple degrees. You can do outdoors things about 8-9 months of the year rather than about 5-6 months in Indiana (without a coat).

Good luck in your search!

Hurricane Season is always something to think about here. We've owned here since 2003 and have had some real damage done some years, other years nothing.

I would never live on the ocean. It's terrifying during a storm and everything rots and rusts much faster than inland.

Living near Duke University would be a great place: safe towns, great GREAT medical care, etc.

I think the PCP thing is a nationwide crisis, but it's felt more here and in other rural areas because it's a long drive to a "city" to find another doctor. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Sir Walter [NC], I was deep in a rabbit hole, looking what is a disposable email and how to open it.

Still not sure if it can last a week or two…

Can recommend any service?
