Looking at my investment account statements and had the distinct feeling that I was throwing in good money after bad. I didn't sell off but decided to start investing in I Bonds which are returning 9.62% currently. I decided to just play the basic compounding game for now. You're limited to $ 10,000 per SSN or EIN and must hold for a year. If you withdraw within 5 years, you subject to losing 3 months of interest rate crediting. Taxes are deferred on the interest until you redeem and there's no risk of loss of principal. I'm figuring that's not a bad deal for now.

I think returns on stocks are going to be tepid at minimum and a continued negative at worst. Most of my money is in balanced funds which should temper the situation somewhat but I'm down 12%+ YTD. The rate hikes affect both stocks and bonds, so little is looking viable now.

I'm throwing a few more dollars into stocks, I figure they are on sale at 15% off since the first of the year. Historically, if you missed out on the 10 best days in the stock market over the last 20 years it cuts your returns in half, missing the 20 best days of 20 years gives you a negative return in the market. Problem is you never know when one of those great days is going to hit but they do tend to follow the down periods. --209.205.xxx.xx

I have been buying I bonds monthly for 5 years now. Just this morning I capped out for the year. 9.62 is incredible. Looking over account, I see several now paying in the 10s. SWEET! By October all of my old ones will really be pay well. Of course if inflation comes under control our rates will drop, but we are guaranteed 6 months of a great rate. --66.169.xxx.xxx

I have maxed out ibonds, personally and llc, but you can only buy 10k a year.

i actually think its not a bad time go buy stocks(S&P500) with such high levels of pessimism. The crowd has fleed stocks and as we know the crowd is usually wrong. --96.37.xxx.xxx

Trying to get a strait answer, thanks to this site I maxed out one for me and one for the queen the first of this year but now I am hearing you may be able to add 10k each in your revocable trust account using the same SS number. --47.205.xxx.x

You can also do tricks like "gift" them to someone -- even for future years -- but the interest starts at this period's rate (i.e. the highest it has been for quite a while).

So, spouses could "gift" each other $10k -- that they don't actually get until 2023 -- but the first 6 months are at the current 9.62% rate.

everyone should quit looking on line at their accounts. another way to think about current values…how much have yours gone up since 2009 (?) do not look at todays DJI…consider your time frames…. certainly have been some grt BUYING opportunities recently…..some here worry about their accounts as of the time they retire. need to think about you will live 20-30 years after that. long story short..ride the waves. myself: I am hoping for another crash so I can buy like I did when mkt fell to 7k….. --107.120.xx.xx

I agree with that very much. I haven't worried about it being down. I'm still adding on a regular basis just like I always do. I admit that I AM thinking of doing my 2022 Roth contributions now instead of waiting until early 2023 like I normally would.

And I was buying and recommending i-bonds before the drop. I think it is a good idea either way. :)
