Some great advice above on how to ask about "Children" (Das ist Verboten!) without asking.... in other words, "there's more than one way to skin a cat."

You have to learn to do that a lot in this business. For example, another thing many employer's are reluctant to discuss is salary or hourly pay. I've had employers not want to discuss that information even when I have a signed release from the applicant. Bigger companies especially are tight lipped and want you to sign up for garbage like "The Work Number" that charged a stupid amount like $50 per session just to verify one pay check. No way I'm paying that!

So...what I do now is this.

Me: "I know there are sometimes things you cannot tell me about this specific person's pay, but for any given person in that position, with that title, and with that many years of experience, what would be a reasonable salary/pay rate?"

9 times out of 10, the HR person/supervisor will share that, because they're not discussing Bob's pay: they're simply discussing the pay rates common at their company for any given person. I have CYA'd for them. Bureaucrats like that.

So, bottom line: Learn how to "ask without asking". There are multiple ways to avoid the "trigger words". As Ken says, it's stupid, but those are the games we play to get what we need.

"Kinda like when the tenant asks

who's the Owner."

and how do you answer that?

I usually say,, why do you ask?

no matter what they say that generally means without telling them,..that they won't be accepted as anyone who has ever asked that has been a super PITA,, wanting to directly call "the owner" and trying to either make friends with them, so they can get special treatment, or complaining about every little thing, or wanting to explain to their friend the owner, why they are not going to pay rent this month --66.30.xx.xxx
