A guy throws down a $5 dollar bill and asks for $5.00 on pump 8. I haven’t heard that in 20 years. Must be driving a block. --67.169.xxx.xx |

I can remember when $5 would nearly fill my car. I filled my power washer up while it was in the back of my truck yesterday and it cost $7.50. --209.205.xxx.xx |

I remember after I got out of the service in 1971, I decided to take some time off and do an extended road trip around North America. Gas was 25 cents a gallon. When I got to Yellowstone and needed gas it was 36 cents a gallon, so feeling like I was getting ripped off, I only got half a tank (8 gal or so) and said I was going to go on to a place that had decent prices. Ah, the good old days. --24.180.xx.xx |

It was unheard of to pump your own gas in 1964. --24.183.xxx.xxx |

The good old days were when I could drive into a 'pump your own gas only' station and batt my eyelashes at the clerk or any nice guy near me and they would happily fill my tank. No gas on my hands. Nice. Doesn't work that way now. Best time was at a TRUCK STOP. Only big rigs but I cruised in on empty and everyone rushed over to push me to the pumps and helped me get gas when I wasn't supposed to be in there. Same cross country trip I pulled into a self-service only (no other place around) and the attendant, behind glass enclosure, all alone and not supposed to leave, came out and locked up the place just to pump gas for me. Line of angry people waiting to pay (in advance only) were NOT happy. I was. --174.65.xxx.xx |

Hi Jim in O C. I'm down South a bit in the Chula Vista area of San Diego County. Nice area with not much of any industry. I'm in an area that was built around the 1930's and 40's. Been nice here for my 44 years and before that, only a block away for 18 years when I was a child. I knew most of the people who lived right on this block from school, and a load of the houses, mine included are small 2 bedroom, 1 bath, on huge lots. I was lucky to rent this one for 20 years and then was offered the whole property (with 2 rentals behind). 2/3 acre, 3 houses, empty lot already with address scheduled for a duplex, which I will never be able to build given prices. The 2 rentals more than pay my mortgage and costs. Just happened without me ever thinking about being a Landlord. Too good to pass up. --174.65.xxx.xx |

Currency devaluation, although historically known to occur in every great (aka large) civilization, is surprisingly absent from the mind of many modern citizens. Instead of laying the blame at the feet of Govt overspending, they are taught to hate "evil businesses"....the same ones who provide the goods and services that people are incapable or unwilling to provide for themselves.

I would also wonder if the good old days weren't before the industrial revolution, when everyone was grew their own food, built their own buildings, made their own clothes,ect.....
