On my computers, I have been getting notices that I can add (from windows 10 ) to switch to win 11. Anyone think that its a good (or bad idea?)

Any real advantage? --66.30.xx.xxx

I'm an IT person. From a technical standpoint, sure, not a big deal to go from Win10 to Win11. And MS is certainly going to try to force you to do it over the next year.

From a personal standpoint, I do not like the new default interface with the taskbar icons at the bottom centered (like on a Mac). I expect my icons to always be in the same place -- not shift about all over the place depending on what I have open. I expect my Start button to be in the bottom left corner so that I can always get to it quickly -- not have to search for it.

That being said, you can customize it to make it more like Win10. Which is what I will do. But most people tend to not do that -- so just a little warning. :)

I have the mentality that if it doesn't break, don't touch it. So I have declined the free offer to upgrade to Windows11 several times. Unless Windows11 has new features that I want to use, I'm staying with Windows10. --94.140.x.xx

John, is there anyway to stop the pop ups on windows 10?

It came with McAfee security and it keeps popping up for me to renew. Is there anyway to eliminate these kinds of interruptions? --73.120.xx.xxx

Seriously -- McAfee is garbage. The built-in Windows Defender is fine. Just remove it. M

When upgrading, it always pays to wait. Usually about the time the first Service Pack rolls out is when I upgrade. The service pack comes several months after the initial upgrade and also during those months preceding the service pack, all the vendors of those apps you can't live without are releasing upgrades to fix issues with those apps on the new OS. Printer/scanner drivers are getting updated too. By the time SP1 rolls out, the biggest issues are fixed and the upgrade usually goes without a hitch. Although, expect to be forced to buy a few app upgrades. The app vendors usually use a OS upgrade as an excuse to force you into buying their new app version. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Depends on your hardware. TPM is a sticky wicket. I have some older peripherals that I don't care to have to go through the hassle. Sure Microsoft has a list of supported devices, but yeah the windows drivers often leave out lots of features and the manufacturers dont' always keep up with the latest O/S.

You can hack the registry if you want to stop the notifications and/or want W11 to run with your TPM non conforming device. --72.231.xxx.xx

A lot of computers will be obsolete when Windows 11 is installed. I was unable to use printer where where had sign in when using printer where printer is private as sometimes receive emails from doctor. Most of the laptop and desktop computers switched Linus Cinnamon 20.3 where Linux is free with free updates along with a lot less junk that slows computer down. For email using Thunderbird. Recently decided not throw computer out where bought a Imac 27" desktop computer for $200 Cdn used where printer works with no issues along easy set up. Mac has completely different operating system where now considering buying Imac laptop as well. At lease with Linux OS 20.3 there is not the amount of spyware along with using duck duck go search engine so there no profile on me. Some people value privacy as microsoft sent a email that I using a Imac along frequent emails when using Linux where that is not going to change my mind. They are selling information for advertise agencies. Even though Imac is much older computer the computer works faster any windows owned. It is really difficult to remove unwanted software with windows where have download Ccleaner and other software to remove garbage. The less unnecessary software the faster a computer runs. If do not use for games then take it out. If go any computer store selling new computers they do not sell with computers with Linux. If micro soft thinks everyone is going to buy a computer every three years then those who own a computer with a perfect hardware is not for me. --68.69.xxx.xxx

I NEVER use onedrive, nor do i sign into windows using a PIN. Disaster! Make a LOCAL account! I never sign into any browsers either. The less you can sign into the better but never have the computer remember your pwds. Always type it in yourself. --72.231.xxx.xx

Normal users are going to have a hard time making a "local" account under Windows 11. MS has made it very difficult unless you really know what you are doing... MS very much wants everything in the cloud. They are killing local servers (and have been for years now). They hope to kill local PC storage as soon as they can. They want you locked into a monthly subscription plan for everything, of course.

And I disagree with MAP on remembering passwords. If you use a PROPER and SECURE password manager, then you absolutely SHOULD have it remember your passwords. Because, otherwise, you're very likely to start using the same password for too many things so that you "remember" it. You'd be much better off to remember one "master" password for your password manager -- and have IT remember UNIQUE passwords for every site that you use.

I use Bitwarden (it is free), but there are other decent password managers too.

John [MI] pretty funny that you mention the start button in the bottom corner as I have always moved/kept my task bar at the top of the screen (I find it much more out of the way there) and I have heard that Win 11 will NOT let me do that.

I raised my kids with the same "thoughts" about where the task bar should be and one of them who is still in college and had Win 11 forced upon them by the school is flabbergasted that he can't move his Win 11 task bar to the top. So much so that he went and re-installed Win10.

I guess we all have habits that die hard.

For me, I have not upgraded yet and will hold out for at least a while longer.

You can move the taskbar to the top in Win11, but it requires a registry hack instead of just a setting. MS is getting way too much like Apple in forcing things to look the way THEY want instead of what the user might want. They used to be able to argue that that is why they were a better choice than Apple -- because they didn't force you into Apple's mold. But, now they are doing the same crap.
