I am fixing up a vacant class D rental to sell. The previous highly intelligent owner applied texture paint to walls and ceilings, even in the kitchen ;-( Instead of a power roller and brush, I was thinking of using a HVLP sprayer. This will be a quick and dirty, satin white paint on all surfaces job to freshen up the house for sale.

I have never used a spray gun and was wondering about any possible problems. Does this sound like a plan or stick with the brush and power roller? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Awful. I had a tenant do that to a bathroom once. Looked like the inside of a bees nest. I sanded it down a lot. Personally I would be afraid of inhaling too much chemical. --108.24.xx.xx

HVLP will be a bad idea….very slow coverage. Perhaps you mean an airless sprayer, that will work…but be prepared for A LOT of masking….the fine mist gets on everything! You’ll need to buy lots of masking tape and paper, mask off cabinets, countertops, light fixtures, floors, etc. once you do all that, you can spray an entire room in 10 minutes as long as you are spraying all surfaces the same color and sheen. If you want flat white ceilings and colored walls, have fun masking off the ceilings lol. --99.92.xxx.xxx

The time and expense of all the prep - as Hoosier described isn't worth it.

Now, if you are replacing the flooring, etc & don't need to cover it all, that's different. Then, the speed of spraying can be worthwhile. --68.229.xxx.xxx

A spray gun is a nightmare. You have to learn how to use it. How to thin out the paint. To put the paint through a strainer or a tiny piece of paint residue will clog the nozzle tip. --47.156.xx.xx

Thanks for all the replies. I will use a power roller and brush and Motrin for my sore arm :-)

I agree with Hoosier. Do not use HVLP. Rent a sprayer and mask everything.

Caution: be careful about taping off prior finish. When you pull the tape off, the texture/paint might come with it. Same with trying to roll paint on it. Don't ask me how I know. --67.184.xxx.xxx

Since it is a D house and the walls are textured grab an 18" roller and covers. Get it loaded up with paint and have at it. Heavier but the extra coverage and less time loading the roller makes it go faster.

The texture will help hide roller marks if you get them too.

I have a nice airless sprayer. I used to have someone mask everything off and then I would spray it all. Haven't used that thing in years. Loaned it out a couple times. Too much work to get it going well, then clean up and of course all the masking and unmasking. --107.147.xx.xxx

Del,

Roll it. Fluffy roller and a 4” brush.

It takes hours to mask and it still gets under the paper or plastic.

We use HVLP for cabinets and doors.

$299 Graco sprayer for exterior or an empty house.
