I just read that there is a move to change the language of using the term "Landlord" to "Housing Provider" due to the negative connotations of being a person who rakes in money and leaves some renters homeless. What do you think of the proposed change in language? --99.190.xxx.xx |

Good post. The schools now say the kids have “home learning” and not “homework”, like work is a bad word……
So I am not surprised. And our credit union has a new name for the collection’s department. I guess if we can all feel better, we will all feel better. And I do not know anyone who says “shut up” to anyone anymore. Language can effect things. Also “master suite” is now “owner’s suite”.
If it suits you, go for it. Maybe a lawyer needs to chime in- are contracts still required to say “landlord” and “tenant”? --76.242.xx.xxx |

In French they have another name which means owner not landlord. Approximately 1/3 of the population here has to rent where 1/3 of renters require a government subsidy to pay rent as income is too low. Suppose tomorrow all the rental housing providers were no longer here then there would be a serious homeless problem. The extreme left wing tenancy advocate groups is really a hate group. If the chairs are serious about providing free rent with free utilities then move out the houses they own then make that happen. One tenant told me they are receiving around $500,000 per year in government subsidies where the only they show for is housing for less then handful of people. Over a period of ten years a large apartment complex could be bought then run it as non profit. During this provincial election campaign it is incredible what the left wing parties are promising where if they were elected the promises would evaporate. On June 2nd there is strong possibility Ontario will elect the Progressive Conservatives with a majority where legislation is passed without any opposition. Remember it is easy to be a critic where they have accomplished absolutely nothing in life. --68.69.xxx.xxx |

Why all these changes?
Isn't life and the English language complicated enough as it is?
Soon, it will be a crime to say certain things, or is it already?
Now, if we can make the English language, as a whole, simpler, then I am all for that. Otherwise, I am a LL.

The VA Landlord-Tenant law still says "Landlord" & "Tenant".
Therefore, those are the terms I use in my rental agreement.
However, if the situation arises in a conversation & it seems appropriate at the time, I will(prefer to) use another term - residential rental property manager, housing provider, property manager.
I see them basically as synonyms - none is better than the other. As long as you know what I'm talking about. --68.229.xxx.xxx |

What does "landlord" convey? It implies superiority. I think it's an outmoded, outdated, should-be-abandoned term.

I'm not woke enough nor do I have the energy to reinvent the wheel. I am a landlord and I abide by the Pennsylvania Landlord/Tenant Act.
Adele, I still say "shut up" ... usually phrased as a question to my adult kids as in "will you shut up?" ... and I usually follow that up with "or I'll slap you". Perhaps I elicit an eye roll, perhaps a giggle, usually they continue on and ignore me!!

She is also a woman in the name landlord doesn't work for her either. And landlady I'm sorry just sounds stupid. It sounds like Pearl or Mrs Murphy.
