I've mentioned before that I have silently joined a local FB rentals wanted/offered group, mainly to gauge the local market. It has been informative and entertaining.A recent post was by someone griping about how greedy and awful LLs were to raise rents during this difficult time, which is a common theme of many posts.

I guess that one LL had finally had enough, and pointedly listed HIS losses during eviction shutdowns due to COVID. He had several tenants who paid zero for 10-12 months,despite being employed and having three rounds of stimulus money. Selling a couple of properties in this hot market will help, but he is fairly certain of never collecting on the unpaid rent after the evictions go through, which will affect his long-term financial picture.

The people that are willing to do this to landlords are greedy ,selfish thieves and don't care, period. They are worse than trash.

In my area, I just talked to a couple yesterday and they mentioned that many landlords have had enough and are just selling or going to airbnb. Maybe the higher end landlords are having better luck but the ones that have low end units are often having trouble.

On one of my FB groups just had a tenant complain that her LL was going to sell her house, but until he did her rent was going up. She said, "I've been here 4 years, what could have changed?"

I explained about materials cost increases, insurance rates skyrocketing here, labor shortages, etc.

She said, "Okay that makes sense but I'M the one who's done all the repairs. I had the roof fixed and only charged him 4 months rent. I replaced the stove and charged him two months rent...etc." I told her it sounds as if he is barely getting by if all the rent is going to repairs she is doing!

She seemed to realize what she was saying. Maybe her LL had a point? But I bet once she gets off FB she is bad-mouthing him to everyone for raising her rent. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Not surprised in the least. I get entertainment out of the local for sale groups I'm in where people get into shouting matches with people they don't know for reasons that have nothing to do with the original post.

Any time I list something, I turn off comments immediately. They are a dumpster fire of vitriol among people with nothing but digital courage.

Yeah I was always told by a REI pro that tenants don't care that you "have a mortgage/insurance/utilities/upkeep to pay."

Wow, I thought behavior in buy/sell and tenant groups was strictly a local phenomenon. I turn off comments on any ads as well. Folks here routinely trash ads for rentals and items for sale. And there's constant complaining in tenant groups about greedy LL's and resentment over transplants driving up rents. It's educational as some of those same folks turn up responding to ads. I automatically decline them. I maintain that the real shortage is --209.122.xx.xxx

I go on those sites partly to try to keep track of what other landlords are asking for rent although not much available and partly for the entertainment value.GKARL,dont be concerned about your area being the only area with drama and trashy people,they are everywhere --74.77.xx.xx

One very decent landlord posts properties and folks go crazy with rude comments. They also ask all kinds of questions, that she has the answers to in her post. She VERY kindly answers them ... I would have no patience for this. Every so often she comes up with very thoughtful (and accurate) answers when someone goes on a general rant about slumlords. They attack her and their "justifications" are truly eye opening.

They are equally toxic with the feral ... oops, community ... cat ladies. I love cats but these women are ferocious should someone dare to suggest these cats using their patio cushions as bathrooms is not acceptable. --98.237.xxx.xx
