6x, just seeing your post about the junk property. In NY one can dig a hole 16' deep and bury a lot, but not everything can go in the hole. Related problem is making sure that there is not used oil poured on the ground everywhere or other toxic stuff that will/ has affected the well (I assume it's not on city water). If you think you will live there then have the water tested. You might try spending time there without fully committing to it and see if you like it as much as you think. Sounds like you will. That said you might discover the annoying neighbor that rides their atv and such wherever they want and that's the country version of city noise.

I've lived in a few of my apartments over the years as I visited and fixed others up; nothing I'm attached to. My B building in another city might be a place I 'retire' to since there is great healthcare there. I'm in a rental I took over now and made it home. I'm not married to it but I have planted fruit trees and expended the garden, so it would be hard to walk away from all that, but I'll be glad for the day I'm not on a hill, in the wind and have many stairs to climb. It WILL work out, hopefully you can adjust to HIS schedule if it varies from yours. Every opportunity provides a lesson, sounds like you're listening. Best of luck to you and your future. --24.194.xxx.xx

Thank you small potatoes.

Unfortunately there are numerous amounts and types of stuff that is partially buried but also on top of the ground. The first thing that I did was clean out a 55+ gallon city trash can that had used oil containers. The containers had been burst and, apparently at some point, the lid was left open and so got rained in. It was full of a mixture of oil and water. Some had leaked out of the can at a midway point where there is a handle for the garbage truck to grab. I got the rest out carefully as to spill as little as possible.

I have found over 25 gallons of full paint cans, but I haven't opened them yet to see what is in them.

There is actually public potable water supply to the property, however, the old well is still there. It has a septic system and somewhere should be a gray water drain.

I have the bulk of the shingle pile picked up now and all is looking much better.

Good idea on the staying there as a trial run. I could camp out for a couple of weeks when I have everything done as to enjoy the place instead of working on it the whole time.

I hear the farm animals every day, but I like them. Now, to pet them when I get things done.

Thank you for the encouragement. --73.120.xx.xxx

Any place that sells oil has to take the waste oil, clean 5 gallon bucket and pour it in the bucket and put a good lid on it and take it to auto zone or somewhere like that, they will take it.Junk paint pour it over the stuff in the dumpster and let it dry, that is how you get rid of junk paint. Be aware the fence may be electrified, you dont want to get shocked,it hurts.Go meet the neighbor farmer and tell him you want to meet his cows, most farmers prefer to meet there neighbors, friends are less likely to complain to a govt agency when they spread manure and it smells. Is it a dairy farm? --74.77.xx.xx

Thank you, Ken.

I do not think it is a dairy farm. My understanding is that a guy rents (free for mowing) the land for his cows. I am not sure what all the other neighbor does with their farm animals, but they have plenty to choose from. --73.120.xx.xxx

One way to harden old paint in a can is buy cheap kitty litter from Dollar General and mix it with the paint and leave the lid off, so it dies and hardens. Our local trash service will haul it off. --162.249.xx.xxx
