Is a 100 gallon commercial electric central water heater available, and if so, what is approx estimate of additional cost in percentage to operate it instead of gas??

I have house meter for gas and electric so that is no problem but outlets are only 110-120 volts. Does 100 gallon commercial electric require higher voltage???

I have always used only gas water heaters but I understand electric lasts longer so any other pros or cons???

Dino, I only use electric water heaters in my single family homes and they are always 40 gallons. They all use 220 volts and I have to have an electrician run a wire from the electric panel to the water heater. --149.19.xx.xx

Dino - Do you have the amperage capacity to feed a heater that big? I have seen 85 gallon electrics and they are tall and draw lots of amps. Will it even fit where you plan to install?

There are two types of water heaters which are the disposable direct fired natural gas water heaters with a open flue where heat is constantly going up chimney where will lose 7 to 12 degrees per hour. Expensive upfront is to buy a buy a stainless steel indirect water heater then buy a natural gas boiler where the water heater will last up to thirty years as the standby loss is 0.6 degrees per hour. Using anything electric here is so expensive to operate where people here switch to natural gas. Another option which is going to require more capacity is a heat pump which uses surrounding air to extract heat like a refrigerator in reverse. If installed a solar collector on roof then could reduce capacity of water heater. In order to determine the amperage then look up the wattage of the elements on 100 Us gallon water then divide by 240 VAC then will find the amperage. Only very small under the counter tank water heaters work on 120 VAC. With the cost of energy now and in the future would make a mistake by installing a costly system. A gas water heater will produce more capacity for the same size where may have to install two water heaters of that capacity to get adequate hot water. A demand electric water could be installed in each rental unit which is going to require 200 amps of electrical service where the tenants will pay if electricity is metered out to each rental unit. --68.69.xxx.xxx

I had a place I bought with a 100 gallon water heater. I think someone before me was renting it from the electric company. It would only heat at off peak times. There was plenty of reserve and it was in a basement so room wasn't a problem.

Finally replaced it because it had bolt in elements and started rusting thru even with city water.

Had another with the same situation except it was still being rented. I made the seller swap it out with a new unit that was owned. Tenants didn't want to mess with the rental. Probably should have since they were on a pretty bad well.

Might check and see if that is a thing that electric companies still do. --107.147.xx.xxx
