If you had some cash to burn, up to $10,000, what type fund would you put it in right now? I am, for whatever reason, partial to large cap funds. I like long term growth. I like dividends. No need for the money in the near future, actually probably never will need it.

I don't want other ways to invest - I want this in the stock market.

Any words of wisdom that I can't get from googling or asking the financial guy opinions? --98.237.xxx.xx

Good question, especially with the market getting beat up lately.

Just my opinion here-- I'd run with someone that has long term experience and has been through stuff like this before. I'd put half in the hands of Warren Buffet, a proven long time winner and the other half in the hands of a turnaround artist who has a track record of buying companies in trouble and fixing the problems, like Carl Icahn or someone like that. These guys have been around for decades, seen it, done it, and seem, to me, to know where and how to allocate the money they handle. They have large stakes in their own companies. Especially Buffet. Icahn's company is currently said to be overvalued, but sometimes those doing the evaluating are wrong. That could have been done months ago when things wee different.

I recall not long ago, Buffet and his partner in the company, Charlie Munger were asked about investing in crypto, because it was "hot" and everyone was saying "can't lose" stuff. They both said it was "rat poison on steroids" and they were not interested in it. Everyone said they were wrong. We've all seen lately what happened in the crypto world. Not saying all crypto is going to zero, but it seems a risky bet. Back in last November, it looked like a good bet and I put some money into some of the smaller coins. My little stake grew by 5X pretty quick but instead of taking profits, I held on, expecting more.Because of the hype. Last week, with the announcements about coinbase in trouble and the plunging value of many of them, I cashed out. Luckily, I made a very small profit, but the large bulk of the 5X that I got back in Nov era went poof and in the end, most of what I got was anxiety.

So in conclusion, run with long term proven winners who have been through trouble before.

Dodge, already did my $10,000 along with my kids and grandkids.

Richard - a few years ago I decided I wanted on the band wagon and wanted to buy marijuana ... not a baggie on the corner but a piece of a company (smiley face). I only invested $500 and I really spent time figuring out which company was the "best". I believe yesterday it was valued at $25ish. Had it taken off as expected, I'd be pounding my head onto the wall. Happy now that my $500 experiment was just that ...an experiment rather than an investment. I am relatively risk tolerant so I'll have to look up Carl Ichan - don't know who he is.

thanks Marv - I've done well with Vanguard and Fidelity funds but there are so many to choose from it boggles my mind. --98.237.xxx.xx

If you want exposure to weed, look at Altria (MO) also known as Philip Morris. They’re growing a large footprint in the industry and are based in VA where weed was legalized in ‘21. They pay a 6.6% dividend --50.202.xxx.xx

Broad market index fund like the Vanguard S&P 500. They seem to have reasonably good returns, low expense ratios, and have met or beat market performance since inception.

My though is if the 500 biggest companies in the USA fail, losing our money in the stock market would be one of the least of our worries.

On that note, if you don't have long-shelf life food and day-to-day sundries stockpiled for a year yet, I would make sure to square that away first before investing. People with huge stock portfolios were just as unable to buy toilet paper as anyone else in 2020. Where stuff isn't on the shelf, it's not on the shelf! You want YOUR shelf to be full, always. --184.4.xx.xx

another vote for vanguard sp 500 or other low cost index fund. it's almost impossible to beat the market at the retail level and low cost is key. Fortune. agazine does a decent job identifying individual stocks and categories, but remember it's all gambling if it's not your day job.

Richard, I agree about crypto. until the day the govt indexes everyone and you are a Block chain number and then all funds will be tokens on the chain --172.58.xxx.xxx

Sid,

Been doing just that for decades. People called me crazy because I stocked up on certain things.

Then when the little shortage hit because of the bank bug they were scrambling for essentials like toilet paper.

I remember working on one house during all that. I typically move stuff from place to place when going thru longer rehabs. Well I took a big case of TP over, put it in a cabinet, took a picture and sent it out saying I was accepting offers on the house. To some it doubled the worth of the house right then.

Silly people. --107.147.xx.xxx

You'll never go wrong investing in a stock that has a good 20 yr track record of paying dividends at an increasing rate per shr.

I too own MO, but PG, XOM, MMM, and others should also be on your list.

Others have proven that index funds track better over time too. --108.69.xxx.xxx

it concerns me when several posting on this thread really have no idea what they are positing. sid is a good example. If you only have $10k to mess with then Dodge is right on. I don’t mess with index funds.. To all those who have no idea what to do. invest in mutual funds. many different types of funds. talk directly to Vanguard/Fidelity etc for advice. do NOT buy through a broker to buy into the options offered by those big cos. you can buy in yourself.it should be borne in mind that some of the suggestions offered on this thread are good specifically to them. I would suggest visiting with a financial planner. not though for just $10k. If you have $500k or more available. --107.77.xxx.xx
