We have a nice single family home that is almost ready to put on the market for rent. Really is a good neighborhood, but we did have a break in right after tenant of 6 years moved out (at our request).

Turns out the young men who broke in are friend of the former tenants sons. Guess this was our "reward" for giving them notice to leave.

Question-- Would you chance it by putting a For Rent sign out front of the house or not? --24.233.xxx.xx

I have a large box of custom made signs that I bought about 7 years ago and I don't even use them. With all the responses I get from online advertising, it's just not necessary any more. Plus why invite phone calls? --73.177.xxx.xx

Do you need too? Online enough? Or do you attract from signs? --172.56.xx.xxx

With the Homeless situation here in my City of Los Angeles, a "FOR RENT" sign in an invitation for someone to break in and claim tenancy. The police here in L.A. do nothing for landlords.

I'm in a very similar situation. The house has been vacant, undergoing renovation for so long, everybody knows it's vacant anyway.

I also have established friendly relations with some neighbors & have a simplisafe system there.

I have had about 1/2 dozen or so people stop & inquire & have been following the renovation. I told them to look for a sign when it's ready.

I plan to put a yard sign for about a week, before I bother to put it online. At the same time, I plan to do some targeted marketing to the local military. --68.229.xxx.xxx

I haven’t used yard signs in probably 15 years. The leads I got from them were rarely qualified, I got plenty of leads from other sources, and I considered it an invitation for a break-in. As far as I could tell, the only benefit is that when online prospects showed up for a showing, it was confirmation to them that they had found the right house. --100.34.x.xx

I feel safe having a for rent sign with an information sheet next to the for rent sign. I do have my Simple Safe alarm activated. After the neighbors take the first 50 copies the actual people looking for housing start to call. My information sheet tells the requirements to be considered so this thins out the tire kickers. --99.23.xxx.x

I'm like others NO "come steal" sign in the front yard. Been 10 to 105 years since we used them - just about how long its been since our last AC unit was stolen.

Run your normal ad. Place your flyer in a front window on the home-- so people can't steal it.

Quote from office people: we have a flyer in the window. your welcome to get out and walk around the house and check out the neighborhood. If it's what and where your looking for call back and we'll make the appt. We have a seperate phone line only for advertising with the ringer off. SO we don't go crazy with calls. --99.103.xxx.xxx

When my houses are vacant I put a lot of effort into making them look like someone is still living there. So, no sign in front announcing that the house is empty. --76.178.xxx.xxx

sign or no sign outside? (by MessManager [IN]) Posted on: May 13, 2022 12:06 PM
Message:

It depends on what your sign says

For Rent with your phone number (lots of unnecessary phone calls)

or

For Rent with # Beds and Rent Amount and your phone number

works very well

If it is a questionable neighborhood or intrusive neighbors, do not put a sign in yard.
