I have 2 room renters in my home where I also live. One has been here 7 years and the other 2 years. They keep to themselves between them. They both talk to me and I know the newer one hates the other. The newer one complains to me about the other on a regular basis about very minor issues (a hair in the sink etc) Nothing but trivial things. Newer one want's me to solve everything. He won't talk directly to the other to solve his complaints. Both are grown men.

Should it be my responsibility to solve the issues or should I tell him to talk to the other ?

Yes, at times one would have to play the role of the counselor. I would have a meeting of the three of you and make some common sense rules that all can follow and agree to and understand. I would also put these in writing and post them. IN my house we have times for the bathroom as we only have one and one person in my house has a time crunch deadline to be out the door, so he has a specific time that he has the bathroom roon and another time for the kitchen. No one else can use that time slot without prearranging. Also clarify that leave no trace means, that means clean up after yourself, no hair in the sink, etc. Use the bath and/or kitchen and leave no trace that you were there. ONCE clear and decisive rules are agreed upon then if they are mature grown up adults then every thing goes along. Otherwise I would start charging more money for a cleaning lady to come twice a week and they get to pay for it. --172.58.xx.xxx

You are really lucky to have only this problem. I do not have boarders in my home but I rent out apartments for people/strangers to share. Each can afford to pay their share and not the entire rent on their own.

So what I do in this case is I refuse to "speak" with any one of them on a regular basis. Instead, I HAVE THEM SEND ME A TEXT MESSAGE WITH ANY ISSUE's. WHY? Because if they left a voice message, it would entail an entire story. Now, instead of leaving a "list" of complaints about another border, they stick to what is really important.

Example of short Text message complaints:

-> Joe leaves dirty dishes in the sink. Please help!

-> John leave the toilet seat up, Tell him to put it down, there are women in the house.

To help, I told Joe if he doesn't have time to clean real dishes, he should switch to paper plates or leave a Dollar Bill for someone else to put the dishes in the dishwasher. For a buck all of the other tenants would gladly clean out the sink.

So instead of people going into a dark bathroom and not noticing the seat is up, I installed night lights to shine light on the toilet when the light is off.

Then if that doesn't work, I'm going to raise everyone's rent $5 per month because they can't get along...Money will make them act like adults. --47.155.xx.xxx
