You know, those little tags that can tell where something is?

I'm told some use it for putting it in a package to see where its currently is in transit,..or if its stolen by a porch pirate. others use it for different reasons,..one person somehow had it hidden in a toolbox to see where it is if stolen (not sure how it would work surrounded by a certain amount of metal. another somehow hid it in their bicycle and was able to get police to find it in thieves in their dwelling. There is concern that it can be used to track people, (stalkers/spouses etc.) but it might be useful to find boats or other equipment that gets stolen

I wonder how its powered (battery) and how long it lasts, anyone know?.

I just read a story about a military family doing a cross country move who put an air tag in a box. The day of delivery the driver called and said it would be delayed because the truck was stuck somewhere. Well, they looked at the tags location and it was right in their new city. Driver had something else he wanted to go do for a couple days. Moving company had to apologize after family reported him.

Battery is supposed to last a year and app will alert you when it needs changing. --68.46.xx.xxx

That is a very clever use - putting it in a box when moving. That's a real game changer for those scummy movers that tell you one thing and actually do something else. I hope everyone picks up that tip to use an air tag in a moving box (or furniture) to track the truck. --104.0.xx.xx

BTW,..the case where the police tracked that bicycle,..they found a lot of stolen stuff in that apartment.

Might be a game changer for some thieves,..I understand this was a type of air tag that somehow was able to be put in somewhere that would be very hard for the bad thief to find. --66.30.xx.xxx

Locally, a guy was arrested about 2 weeks ago for stalking. Apparently, he was dating a young lady and through the course he put tracking chips in her purse, car, and shoe. She ended it when she found out and had her lawyer formally notified him to remove the trackers. She hired a security company to check and sure enough they found several devices. I suspect he will be in jail for a while.

Interestingly enough, it is not illegal to put a tracking device on someone's car in the State of Texas. May need to start using them on my contractors vehicles so I can see if they made it to the job site or are at the local pub when they call in sick. --209.16.xx.xxx

I use one on my keys. I had lost them last year while in the grips of a migraine, and while I knew they were in the house, I couldn't find them. Added an airtag. Lost them again a few weeks ago, and the airtag helped me find them. They are great for that sort of purpose.

I've also read a few stories about people adding them to their dog's collar. The dog gets lose, and they track it using the airtag. The airtags are set up to send a signal any time they can connect to any Apple device, not just the one owned by the owner of that Airtag.

In the Android universe, a Tile does a similar thing.

I plan to put one in my suitcase for my next cruise, before I hand my bag to the airline. When we arrive, I'll be able to see if I should look on the luggage carrasel or wait a bit, plus you can make it make noise so you can find your own bags. --149.76.xxx.xx

MikeA, there s a model who this happened to in NYC. creep put one on her coat pocket. the police couldn't file charges because tracking is not the same as stalking and the creep was not actively following her. --172.58.xxx.xxx

As far as stalking or tracking someone, it really has nothing to do with whether YOU use air tags. It's a matter of someone buying their own and placing it on your belongings. Allegedly, in order to combat this Apple has made it so your phone will alert you if it detects an unknown air tag that has been on you for a certain period of time. I think I read 8 hours. --50.107.xxx.xx
