My tenant in a 2nd fl apartment claims to have a mouse issue. He's tried OTC things. Now he wants to get an adult cat to help out. What have you used for mice and had good success? --98.237.xx.xx

Snap trap. 2 for $1 Tell tenant to use them.

Mice exist - deal with it. Spiders too. --75.7.xx.xx

Good kitchen cleaning and snap traps. Snap traps are more humane than anything else, imo. Quick death, no suffering. If the kitchen isn't clean, a cat isn't going to clean it. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Some times an adult cat will just watch the mouse and not catch it. Ask for evidence of mouse such as a sprinkling of mouse poo on the kitchen cabinets, stove etc. If he's a good tenant and pays, then let him get his cat but make sure it's neutered. --108.24.xx.xx

Don't buy the cheap mouse traps with the metal snap arm. Get the modern snap trap made of all plastic, they are black and sold at Walmart or Lowes. They cost a little more but they are much easier/quicker to load and more re-usable (sanitary) than the ones with the metal spring arm. They have small ones for mice and larger ones for rats. I used both sizes with a dab of peanut butter and they work great.

The apartment isn't as clean as I think it should be. Also the downstairs tenant have no mice. I did give him some professional mice bait to use. I also told him nicely to clean good but I dont think he thinks thats an issue. --98.237.xx.xx

Sticky traps with peanut butter in middle good too. I have to kill them though because stuck by glue is an awful death. --216.23.xxx.xx

When setting snap traps, I wear disposable latex gloves to avoid leaving human scent on the traps. I find that setting pairs of traps back-to-back along the perimeter works best. --71.174.xx.xxx

Yet another vote for good old fashioned snap traps with peanut butter. At 50 cents each, you throw the trap away with the dead mouse. Do not place poison bait indoors. Mice will die and cause a bad odor. I put baits in detached garages and sheds. --107.141.xx.xxx

And modify your lease to make the tenant responsible for pest control. If they took possession of a pest-free unit, they should be held responsible to keep it that way. --107.141.xx.xxx

Traps like others.

Old fashion Moth balls in attic and under the house. They don't like the smell.

Also, there is a poison, green pellets in clear bag, that makes the rodent very, very thirsty. They leave in search of water. The water activates the poison, they laid down go to sleep. We use this a lot at the Lake house, because they go down to the lake for water. --173.31.xxx.xxx

Even if you get a cat who is a good mouser, they can only catch the mice that come out into the open. Most of the mice will be inside the walls away from any cat danger.

Go over yourself and set traps and put out poison. Don't believe the tenant when he tells you he has done it himself. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Can't speak to your state laws. In Pa, the LL is responsible for pest control in a MFH. Since this is a top floor apartment, you might want to listen to your resident. The neighbors might also have a mouse problem too. I would be surprised if they don't --24.101.xxx.xxx

GKarl, you can be humane with the sticky trap.

Just check your sticky traps often so that you find the mouse shortly after it has been caught. Transport the mouse and the sticky trap a few miles away, then generously pour some dish detergent on the the stuck mouse, then douse it with water from a bottle. The mice will slide right on off. You can then leave the mouse in its new neighborhood. --98.122.xxx.xx
