Watching a new show on HGTV called Reno My Rental. Yikes! Renter hires the host to transform rooms in a rental. Just watched one. They painted the tile floor, ripped out built ins and wall papered the ceiling, but worry because the wallpaper is removable. The other room got wallpaper on the walls (but don’t worry it’s removable) and they painted every door and trim dark blue! It’s just paint, you can always repaint it before you leave. Is your landlord ok with upgrading the flooring? They usually are. Time to be extra clear on leases and at move in about no alterations and no painting if this show takes off.

My lease states that nothing can be changes or altered in the rental without written permission from me first.

Very rarely have I allowed a tenant to paint anything. Had one change out a medicine cabinet which stayed when they left.

No way would I allow the show to come in and make changes like that, unless they agreed to return everything back to the way it was upon leaving. I would not trust the tenant to do it. --107.147.xx.xxx

My lease states things like that too. I also would not allow a show. My concern would be if that tenants watch that show along with an entitlement attitude start to think they can do what they want to make the rental reflect their styles/personalities. The show isn’t just rearranging furniture and hanging a few pieces of artwork, these are difficult things to return back to the way it was. What tenant is going to repaint doors and trim from dark blue to white. They are not is the answer. It’s about a show promoting a mentality that you can do what you want to your rental and it’s just a little paint to change it back when you leave. --75.67.xxx.xxx
