I just bought a duplex with resistive heat in the ceiling. This seems to have been popular in the late 1960s. One tenant is afraid of fire and doesn't want to turn it on. The other is on a "fixed" income and only runs in 2 rooms.

What's everyone's thoughts and experience on this type of heating system?

It’s supposed to be -7 here in a few days. If that was my tenant, he or she would be pretty darn cold if they didn’t turn it --24.152.xxx.xx

It’s expensive. Even more so than baseboard. --73.177.xxx.xx

Physics heat always rises where does not go downwards. Radiant floor electric heat the most efficient for electric resistance heat as the floor is heated. Installing a high efficiency heat pump for heating and cooling is more efficient as the wattage is about half of electric heat. Sounds like that put in the sixties or a bit later where electricity costs were really low. --68.69.xxx.xxx

It is not really a fire hazard unless you screw something in the ceiling and damage it.

It is a stupid design and idea though because heat rises. Thus, it is expensive to use and leaves you feeling cold.

Your head will be warmer than your feet for sure unless you are sitting.

I lived in a house that had it, when I was a kid. --73.120.xx.xxx

I have a unit with ceiling heat from a gas forced air furnace. Since heat rises, your feet are always cold. --216.23.xxx.xx

If a passive building or net zero building then there is no need for a heating or cooling system as energy would come from solar panels. Electric baseboard is cheap to install but very expensive to operate here where it is really difficult to rent with electric baseboard heat. If radiant floor heating is used then electric or hot water would heat floors then floors would be warm. In Europe forced air heating is not used where boilers or heat from district heating plants. If natural gas is available then installing a natural gas boiler where use commercial Uponor pex to connect up radiation. --68.69.xxx.xxx

Then this tenant needs to move to another house when are can use the heat and feel safe. And this house needs a different resident that will use the heat as it is and feel safe. What is goin on now is NOT MATCH. --172.58.xxx.x

Look into the inverter heat pumps that are gaining more market presence in USA.

They are nothing like the old heat pumps these are variable speed compressor systems and can produce heat down to below zero outdoor temps.

Most are SEER 18-22 rated.

One of the most economical to buy and install yourself is the MrCool Universal (made by Gree).

Or you can have one of their contractors install if they have any in your area.

HVAC guys will badmouth this brand because they sell online from multiple websites, not thru supply houses, so they cannot mark them up and will tell you they are garbage etc etc.

Google Mr Cool Universal there are videos about the install they did in N. Dakota. --100.8.xx.xxx

One of the most reliable heating systems made. The only mechanical parts are the thermostat and control switch. I know of several systems installed in the 1960's that have never had to have maintenance performed on them. You should tell your tenant that every outlet in the house has cable running to them with power on all the time, why worry with the heating cable?

On the other side, you end up having to run a fan to get the heat down to the floor so it isn't the most comfortable heat. Also, since the heat wire is in the ceiling, usually between to sheets of sheetrock, it really pushes a lot of your heat up into the attic so you have to have great insulation. --209.16.xx.xxx
