Without removing an existing toilet is there anyway to tell where the drain hole is? I want to swap 2 toilets in my house but one is currently installed in an unfinished location and literally touches the 2x4's - it would not fit if drywall was installed. I want to move that toilet (and elongated bowel) to my other bathroom but before I start pulling toilets I would like to get an idea if it would fit.

I am hoping the bolts are located very close to center on the drain in the toilet? I would think so, the flange in the floor should be a typical flange with consistent location to the bolts right?

My little prefab houses were all built with 2x3 stud walls.... ok, bigger project to replace studs with smaller studs, but... just an idea if the plumbing stack is too close to the wall for a 'standard' toilet. ( btw, drain waste pipes are maybe harder to fit in my narrow walls, something to consider if one thinks, hey, maybe I'll just do more narrow walls)

I think different models of toilets will tell you on the websites how far from wall they need the drain pipe to be located. Also, wouldn't the bolts be centered on the drain pipe? So, from bolts back to wall should be a measurement that might help figure it out.

Trying to reuse a toilet is nice, until ya drop it . Then ya wish you had standardized things, since a new toilet will be bought anyway. That's my experience, lol! --70.92.xxx.xxx

Don't know how to tell where drain hole is without removing toilet but I believe you should be able to adjust location of flange away from wall by using one that is offset and give you the room you need.

I have never tried this but I have seen them and it appears as though it would work fine.

How old is your house? It is possible that the downstairs toilet is plumbed for a 10” offset toilet but has a 12” offset toilet on it. Or perhaps 3/4” pine paneling is installed behind the toilet after the toilet was originally plumbed. Check the distance of the blots to the wall (not baseboard) to know if this is an issue. --76.179.xxx.xx

Yes, the bolt is in the middle of the drain hole so that it will connect to the flange.

You know they make different rough-in sizes for toilets. The standard is 12" but most big box stores will also carry a 10" model or two. I've seen a 9" rough-in but they are a little harder to find.

The rough-in size is measured from the finished wall to the center of the drain (where the bolts would be).

I believe they are suppose to be 12 inches centered from the back wall and at least 15 inches centered from the side wall. I just put one in where it was 20 inches from the side wall --24.101.xxx.xxx

My house was built in the 60's but had a major rehab in 2010ish (before I bought it). 1 toilet is definitely new, other (which currently has a toilet to close to the studs) was most likely original - it is in the basement, but not for sure. It has a full shower vanity and is 8'x9' - NOT what a basement bathroom would be in the 60's

I only will do this if we can switch toilets, I am not buying one. I want to make an educated guess before I do anything. If this is anything more then simply pulling 2 toilets and swapping it I am not doing it, it is not worth it, long story you do not need to hear.

I do agree with MikeA bolts should be centered on the drain in the floor so I can get a good idea if this will work or not before I make a mess and figure out it will not work:) --23.28.xxx.xx
