1. What are the top 2 or 3 brands?
2. Which is better American Standard or Ruud?

Goodman is not quite as good as they were. Janitrol/junkatrol as our HVAC guy calls them. Think he is using American Standard now. --71.219.xxx.xxx |

Furnace manufactures there are few major companies where there are sub brands which are more of builders line of furnace. There are generally two types of furnaces one the regular efficiency furnace then the high efficiency furnace. A high efficiency furnace has two heat exchangers where the secondary heat exchanger is made of stainless steel. A high efficiency boiler or furnace does not require a chimney where with CVPC pipe can be vented directly through the wall where it is cost effective then lining a chimney. A concentric vent where the combustion air and exhaust goes through one pipe outside. A high efficiency furnace there is one speed then two speed then variable speed which is determined by the heating load. If the insulation is upgraded with low E windows then the furnace can be downsized to where the overall system is more efficient. In the house have Lennox high efficiency furnace with two speed where two different firing rates. View some videos on You Tube where check out reviews along with the sub brands. Compare warranties where the heat exchanger is the most expensive part where if the heat exchanger is gone not worth fixing. A better insulated building the furnace will last longer as the furnace will be working less. Basically the Rheem water heaters are not the best out there where would be reluctant to buy any Rheem products. Finally it is better to go high efficiency as the resale value of the house is higher along with cost increases in natural gas overall it is a better option. The temperature of exhaust gas is lower as the secondary heat exchanger extracts heat that would go up the chimney. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

Furnaces, like cars, have few manufacturers and many brands. And every brand has more than one model.
Think Ford: you can get a Lincoln or a Fiesta, both are Fords but not the same.
I use mostly Goodman:
The furnaces and the spare parts are fairly cheap and readily available. Everyone knows how to work on them, and everyone can get parts. Some brands only sell parts to their dealers.
IMHO, correct sizing and installation are far more important than brand. You can have a really nice furnace installed by a hack and it will never give you good service. Or a cheap furnace by a quality installer and it will last a long time. --216.218.xxx.xxx |

As a licensed mechanic for 50+ years here's the bottom line. This goes for all your equipment: cars trucks planes and trains ships and boats:
P R E V E N T ***** M A I N T E N T A N C E
Good filter, check and clean the circuit board and check connections once a year or every two. Keep inlets clear-- very important. DO NOT CLOSE RETURNS. ALWAYS CRACKED OPEN.
We currently have 63 SFH's. I think only 2 have electric heat. The rest have Goodman Furnaces. Are they the best-- I don't know but I can tell you this-- they're not complicated there not energy efficient with each and every dodad you could add-- and by the way which will fail and cost you more. So yea when an installer loves this brand or that brand-- he's thinking how much am i gonna made NOW and in the FUTURE. You don't need a 92% efficiency rating on rental houses.
Goodman parts can be ordered on amazon nd next day or same day delivery. --99.103.xxx.xxx |

Master HVAC contractor and instructor 25+ years. All the above are spot on. I might add, insulation and building envelope tightness is just as important.
If your HVAC runs less because depend is less, less starting and stopping, less ware and tear.
PM your equipment.
The beginning sizing and installation are the foundation as well. --96.31.xxx.xxx |
