We often over the media saying we need more affordable housing when there description is not making a profit but operates as a substantial loss. No matter where private rental housing is always in better condition along will have more safety features which can be a central fire alarm system, security cameras. Also appliances will be newer and other components in the building will be more up to date. Example a more efficient heating system, more efficient led lighting in hallways, controlled entrance. While the ideals of socialism sound great where in reality socialism does not work. If something breaks down it is usually repaired in a shorter period of time instead of having a problem with hot water system for over 3 months. Tenants are not being given the option as those who have less income only have a housing authority option where many would rather live in a private building. Here a lot of government owned buildings have a very bad reputation.

It's just that the people the government hires to watch over these government housing projects are not the best and the brightest. They are the poorest and the slowest sometimes and have no idea how to prioritize anything. Also procurement is slow and budgets have to be adhered to so new replacement items just don't appear very fast unless there is a warehouse. Since it's not a "business" and not run with a "business" model, everything falls through. There's no "hustle or get fired" mentality. --108.24.xx.xx

There has never been a solution to this problem.
Since the first cities were built it's always been the same. Right now, prices of both materials and labor are way too high to build anything and that's not even adding in the profit and govt fees.
The only real possibility is for the govt to get out of the way and let private people deal with the problem. But we all know the govt will not do that.
Until they do and until a time comes when people actually realize and accept the consequences of their actions and choices instead of expecting and demanding others to solve their problems there will be no solution.
So don't hold your breath.
Stay back try to avoid the chaos. --75.7.xx.xx

After writing went shopping for groceries where in the parking lot someone in bicycle came up to panhandle for money where asked why he was not able to work. In the province of Ontario the minimum wage is $15.00 Cdn per hour where they get around $600.00 per month on welfare. On the main street around lunch time there is a place where they can get free cooked meals where you can see them smoking cigarettes where more then likely they are on social assistance. There are some ghost towns in northern Ontario which the government forced to close down as they closed down the dam which was used to power pulp mills then forced to buy expensive power. Suppose they live for a week then they see the basis for economy is people show up for work where in the ghost no one shows up for work. The extremist leftist groups get government funding where they should be cut off then get a real job like everyone else instead of talking about this non profit utopia that does not exist. It is not only rental housing providers provide housing but decent well paying jobs as goods and services are bought locally not the third world. If government owned is mismanaged there is a reason for that as it is not there money. If they claim affordable housing where a small building operates at a loss of $100,000 per year along not paying the 13 per cent harmonized tax for goods and services. --99.236.xxx.xxx

Yep. Some persons try to have government 'solve' the problem; it seems to me this is done so the individual doesn't have to be a stakeholder in their neighbor's welfare. But not having individuals bearing responsibility for their neighbors means no one gives the panhandler the 'kick in the arse' that is sometimes needed.
Saw this in my own family. As long as my relative had a place to live, and a small amount of 'gubbamint' stipend, no one could tell that person anything, and they continued to live with various vices. Once, the free housing went away, this relative had to move in with their son, or be homeless. Moved in with son, was made to 'toe the line' and health was vastly improved. Both mental and physical health. Having family, either related or acquired is a much better care plan than any government funding.
We all need a 'kick in the arse' sometimes. Thats why this forum is great! --70.92.xxx.xxx

One time for those on social assistance the provincial progressive Conservatives brought in work fare not welfare where they cut the number of people on welfare in half by forcing those to work. Some of them came from welfare families who were on for generations then never went back on welfare. So after many broken promises people voted in the Liberals who closed down the welfare cheat hotline then lifted the lifetime ban on cheats where they quit jobs then they went on cheating again along with not working. Within a few months after many businesses closed down where the tax revenue was reduced. The anti poverty activist said it was inhumane to cut those cheats off. Military service is a volunteer service here where there was never conscription so in the event someone did come back the families did not suffer. It was meant to be help not a way of life. Now many places are looking for help as the improved UI benefits has discouraged people from going to work. Not the best jobs but they earn a minimum of $15 per hour. If you work or do absolutely nothing there is universal health care here. The socialist want this country to be more socialist where they look at the Scandinavian countries as a model where everything is expensive along with people are less well off as the highest taxes for western countries. So in the end it is the middle here not right or left here. --99.236.xxx.xxx
