It appears that the manufacturers of laminate flooring have finally figured out that nobody will buy cardboard-backed flooring now that there's an alternative. I saw some advertised as "waterproof" in my big box store that appears to have some kind of plastic/rubber/pvc composite backing instead of the masonite-style they used to use. Does anyone have experience with this, good or bad? Is it any good?

I haven't tried it, however a Cali distributor sent me samples. It is much thicker than the trafficmaster vinyl. In fact it is thicker than the original "wood" laminate that came out 15+ years ago. It look interesting, but the price per square feet was high for a rental in my opinion. --173.31.xxx.xxx |

For a kitchen or bathroom first put down a Schluter ditra membrane then a good commercial quality porcelain tile then the floor is water resistant. For rental units it is not worthwhile putting down flooring that only has three life cycle which ends up in the landfill. Porcelain is easy to clean along with lit cigarette nothing happens. More then ten years the flooring lasts. Seen many rental housing providers in the never ending landfill cycle where every three years or less replacing flooring. Since having steel roofing installed apartment buildings and house since 2004 the steel roof is still there. The house next door has gone through 3 shingle roofs. For the house paid $5,000 to install which included 7 per cent tax. Now would cost more at least double where spending more upfront will cost less then the landfill cycle. In the event of severe weather the shingles blow off where most cases the steel roof is not effected. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

Robin,
Yes. Great experience.
HD brought in a special offering of all vinyl lick lock laminate that was extra stiff. We used it to cover an old cupped hardwood floor without laying luan subfloor.
Many brands available now.
