From the WSJ
President Biden says he feels your pain regarding inflation, and he’s made public-relations moves to show it, begging ports to move goods faster and OPEC to produce more oil. Too bad his Administration’s policies reveal different priorities. Witness the Commerce Department’s decision to raise tariffs on lumber, which will raise building costs in an already strained housing market.
The Commerce Department said last week that it will double the average tariff on Canadian softwood lumber to 17.9% from 8.99%. Softwoods like spruce and pine are the backbone of light construction, and a steady supply is key to restraining the rising cost of home building. For decades U.S. sawmills haven’t been able to meet domestic demand, but they’ve leaned on government to protect their market share.

Doubts About Biden As The President Turns 79
Now the Biden Administration is taking up their cause, squeezing imported wood. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has framed the decision as a bargaining move, pressuring Canada to curb its lumber subsidies. But the U.S. lobby admits the tariffs are a boon to American producers. --47.205.xxx.x |

It is estimated that fifty per cent is Canadian lumber where one wonders about free trade where that is not free trade. There was going to be a subsidy for EV vehicles made in the Us where there is free movement for vehicles and parts between two countries. Protectionism raises prices as supply goes down and demand goes up. There are metal studs which are not used a lot. The EV subsidy only applies to vehicles made at union operated assembly plants where other EV vehicles made in the Us will not qualify. With all this talk about going green it should apply to all EV vehicles except if made in China. What happened with lumber is just in time where not over stocking lumber where there is no over supply where lumber never goes on sale. More and more just in time where less goes on sale for everything. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

In my area 8' 2x4s SPF are currently about $3.50 at HD & Lowes & about $.75 more at the local lumber yards. At the height of things, the same 2x4s were $12.25 & $13.50 respectively. 7/17 Zip wall is currently $34.25 at the BB & $2.00- $4.00 more at the local lumber yards. At the height of things these were more than double those prices even if buying lift quantities.
PT lumber at both the BB & local lumber yards is down to less than 1/2 the prices that it was at the height. More importantly from my perspective, it is available unlike during the height of things.
Plastic electric boxes & 12/2 & 14/2 wire seem to be in short supply & are rather pricey. --71.174.xx.xxx |

8' 2x4 studs were selling for $10.47 a piece at Lowes about 10 months ago. Today they're at $3.98. I wasn't tracking plywood 10 months ago, so no clue how high it was then.
My favorite is how Biden touted on his first day in office that he was signing legislation to shut down the Keystone pipeline...now he's tapping the strategic oil reserve. I'm not sure if the pipeline would have been completed yet, but it shows how knee-jerk movements to appease various voting blocks can come back to bite you in the behind later. Let's face it: fossil fuels are going to continue to be a major part of our energy plan for decades. Might as well have domestic sources vs. depend on foreign sources. --108.230.xxx.xx |

Heard a trucker call in to talk radio the other day. Under the T admin, they could make three trips a day to haul goods. Now under the B regime, they have been issued an edict to make only one trip a day thus causing the "supply chain crisis." (TM)
Fifty bucks says they will go back to the 3 trip a day as usual just before the midterms to appear to have "solved the supply chain crisis." (TM) --174.208.xx.xxx |

I don't get your issue. You either want manufacturing and raw material production in the US or you don't. If you do want it, you have de-incentive lower cost imports thereby favoring US production. There are millions of unused leases for logging and oil in the US. Its going to create jobs but everyone costs will go up because labor costs more in the US unless you want to socialize costs in those industries. If not then don't complain about US jobs not being available. --72.49.xxx.xxx |

I'm not making a preference statement, I'm pointing out your hypocrisy. Tariffs were OK during 2016 through 2019 now all of sudden they are not? You sound confused. Also min wage was $7.25 in 2009 and the same 12 years later. How much did your rent go up? I also heard that red states are paying unemployment to vax quitters. I thought we were trying to put people back to work...hmm. --72.49.xxx.xxx |

Not one job in the lumber industry was lost because the mills couldn't sell their product. American mills could not produce enough lumber to meet the demand. They ran 24 hours a day. It was not Canadian lumber that closed down the timber industry in the USA. Tariffs have absolutely nothing to do with it.

I never said the industry lost jobs. Putting aside NEs and Oregons blabber, if you want prices to drop you need to increase supply. You increase supply by opening more logging on unused leases thereby creating more jobs. You can make opening unused leases more profitable many ways, one by increasing tariffs on cheaper imports. But the logging industry was forecasted to lose 16% of it's jobs from 2016 to 2026 so your statement that the industry never lost jobs is suspect. In the last two years its been easier to promote Corporate socialism and reap profits from cost increases than actually invest in your industry and allow market forces to dictate when you make money. --72.49.xxx.xxx |
