10.7 percent of households in New Jersey receive food stamps
Bob Jagendorf // Wikicommons
Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, food insecurity throughout the United States affected more than 37 million people, among them 11 million children. That number, though staggering, represented the lowest point of food insecurity in the country in almost 90 years. Against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic, national hunger-relief organization Feeding America expects more than 42 million Americans to face food shortages during 2021. This demand puts additional strain on already-strapped food pantries and hunger-relief organizations, and drives significant need for increases in the country's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known previously as food stamps).
Stacker compiled a list of the states where food stamps are used the most using SNAP data released July 10, 2020, by the USDA. The number of households and the poverty rate are current as of 2019 data from the Census Bureau. States are ranked by the percent of households that received food stamps in April 2020. Additional information came from sources like the Center for American Progress, Feeding America, and state websites and local food banks.
New Jersey by the numbers
- Percent of households receiving food stamps: 10.7%
- Total households receiving food stamps: 350,174
- Average monthly benefit per household: $227 (#34 highest among all states)
New Jersey's dense population and high costs of living can contribute to the number of households receiving food stamps. In April 2021, New Jersey’s Department of Human Services announced extra food assistance benefits for 231,000 households in the state.
Here are the states using food stamps the most and least:
States using food stamps the most
#1. New Mexico (27.6% of households)
#2. Rhode Island (22.2% of households)
#3. Washington D.C. (22.0% of households)
States using food stamps the least
#1. Wyoming (5.0% of households)
#2. Utah (7.0% of households)
#3. North Dakota (7.2% of households)

The govt wants as many on the dole as possible. Soon they will tell people that in order to get their "free stuff" they must submit to the magic jab. Same with other free stuff programs - housing, medical, and more. Pretty soon I'll bet you won't be able to get college loans without submitting.Just look at what's happening in Australia and Austria and Europe and Canada. And here.
I've been seeing articles regarding govt taking more control of rentals too. Pretty soon the govt will say we landlords have no right to receive rent.
OH, my bad, they already said that and enforced it, using covid as an excuse.
Smart people are leaving the system and becoming independent of all govt. stuff and programs. --75.7.xx.xx |

Only the private charities here like Salvation Army along with other charities provide food and some provide clothing where a winter coat is essential during the winter months. It was amazing that some of the food wound up in the dumpster where the food was edible where a lot of cans were close to the expiring date. In January the minimum wage in the province of Ontario will be $15.00 dollars per hour where in the Greater Toronto Area along with some other cities it is very difficult to live off as those areas are high cost of living. The positive here is there is universal medical care where if you require a doctor, specialized health treatment that will done at no cost where paid for in taxes. Now there is division between the province of Ontario for the $10 dollar per day care where the federal may drop out support in the future. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

Where I live, the free market took care of minimum wage all by itself a long time ago. Most “minimum wage” type jobs around here have big signs out saying $15/hr. There are few places that are still $12 or $13 per hour, but not many, at least according to my kids and their friends. BTW, only 25% of minimum wage jobs are held by primary breadwinners. The vast majority are held by kids, retirees, spouses with a seconds income, etc. I do think there needs to be a floor for some select populations (e.g. mentally disabled), but for the most part, I think it’s a horribly inefficient way to help out the needy, as the economy pays for 100 people to get a minimum wage into the hands of 25 who really need it. Not to mention setting one federal rate that applies to both Manhattan and Mississippi’s just makes no sense. Even state wide rates seem silly to me (e.g. wealthy suburbs vs rural areas). --100.34.x.xx |

MAT, I took direct care of mentally disabled people for two or three years probably 17 years ago now. There was no such thing as minimum wage at their job. They got to their job at 8 o’clock in the morning and left around three or four. They were paid for the parts that they assembled together. Either by the count or the weight count or whatever. Little jobs that you would never be able to pay the average minimum wage laborer to do. I remember one guy getting about a three dollar check one week. --24.152.xxx.xx |

You see, more money does not solve many problems.
Give the minimum wage folks $100,000 next year and give me the same $100,000 and we will both have different outcomes. Is it at all possible that the emergency bump in unemployment was also a ploy to artificially bump the minimum wage? In Pa the state and fed bump was equal to $15.12 an hour if you worked a straight 40 hour week.
Ironically enough the proposal for the minimum wage was also $15.
So perhaps, just perhaps after getting a taste of $15.12 a hour for doing nothing, people are not that excited about working for less than that. It is a hang over effect that might last a while - until people elect to call it what it was --24.101.xxx.xxx |
