You Tube hiding dislikes

Many times before I attempt a toilet repair, for example, I’ll go to You Tube to find a tutorial on the subject. I'll look at the ratio of “likes” to “dislikes” to judge the quality of the content, in the instructional video. Now without the “dislikes” count, I’m somewhat in the dark about the quality of the video’s instruction.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I’d really like to hear them! Thanks - Bill

I just looked it up as I hadn't realized that had happened, and their reasoning is sound. People were going after smaller content creators especially with "Dislike" attacks.

YouTube acknowledged that, like you, people did use the Dislike count to decide whether to watch a video, and that's how it became a problem by these concerted attacks on certain people.

The Dislike count is visible now only to the content creator, so they have some metrics to judge their own stuff.

I see both sides... yes, there were/are certain news media organizations that were getting dislike to like on their videos at a 2-1, 3-1, even 4-1 ratio, but I can also see dislikes as possibly a weapon to beat up on any content creator.

Honestly, I don't "get" the like/dislike system. I rarely check it. I can tell within 1-2 minutes if a video is worth my time. It's a marginally useful tool for stuff that's trending and as a way to put it into your queue for later re-watching, but I would never consider it to be a valid measure of any "How To" type video. --108.230.xxx.xx

Sid, it's just like restaurant ratings on Yelp, you can go and taste the food, or you can look at the rating and save your time. Like I do with you tube like/dislike ratio, Yelp does the same, making a rating by using a ratio of likes to dislikes, although using a bit more complicated algorithm than I do, to come up with the ratings. --74.102.xx.xx

If they aren't posting the dislikes, you could always take a few seconds to read the comments.

If I'm trying to learn how to do something new-to-me, I am going to watch 3-4 of the videos and look for information from each and then choose the best one.

I mostly use the music videos and its easy to see how little value comes with the "dislike" count. It looks like people hit the dislike button mostly from mean spiritedness. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Also adding this: most of the do-it-yourself videos are completely worthless. Posters get paid for their video whether they know what they are doing or not. Often, I see open plagiarism.

I watch dog training videos and I've found a couple of trainers who know what they are doing and I only watch their videos.

There have to be videos in a series made by people who know what they are doing and you just do a search for their name and only watch their videos.

And agree that most are worthless. That is why I was bumbed when youtube took the dislike count away. It removed one screening tool I used. But yes, comments are great. Hopefully, they don't take those away too. --74.102.xx.xx
