We think no one wants to work? Maybe employers are the a$$holes. Times have changed.

My granddaughter, graduating in December with her Master's, very clean-cut, educated, respectful young lady. Not a partier at all. Has worked for six years as a teacher's aide at a Montessori School but the hours conflicted with her teaching internship for her Masters this semester so she took a night-time restaurant job to help pay the bills.

The restaurant (a very popular bar/restaurant that caters to a younger crowd) told her she had one piercing too many (she has three: two in one ear, one in the other) but hired her anyway. One night she showed up with a new manicure and they told her it was unacceptable as it was navy blue instead of pastel. They told her her braids (she is half-black, so has her hair braided to help control it and save time. Braids, not dreads) were not acceptable.

She is ready to quit for constant harangue about her appearance (trust me, she's a beautiful woman. Not a grandmother's opinion - everyone says so.)

It's a RESTAURANT not IBM. But even IBM is more flexible these days.

And then they complain they can't find cheap help because no one wants to work anymore.

Another story: young girl working as a teacher already. Took a night-time waitress job at another place to help pay the bills. Restaurant kept scheduling her for 40+ hours despite her telling them she was already doing 40 hours at her "real" job and could only do part-time work for them - agreed when she took the job. They said they didn't care, they were short-staffed, she needed to put them first.

She quit.

How silly are these managers???? --108.4.x.xxx

I applied for a part time job at a retail store near my house. They said they are hiring me. They asked what days in Sept and oct was I available to work so they could set up a start date and training. I received an email from the partner who scheduled my training days on the very days I said I wasn't available. When I resent the days I was available and ask for consideration and explained goin forward work days would be a first priority but these two months there were days XYZ already on my calendar. They stopped communicating! Suddenly. Vanished. So yes I agree the employers are part of the problem. Sorry for this young woman's experience, there must be more to the story on their side that they aren't sharing. Crazy times we live in. I don't need a job just thought it would be fun and extra money to pass on for the college kids. Oh well. I too busy anyway.lol --172.58.xxx.xxx

Referring to your second story - my youngest daughter worked for a couple of years for a shop in a local quaint shopping "village". The shop got very busy between mid-November and early January. Daughter was a junior in high school. The understanding when she was hired that she'd work no more than 8 hours a week.

The employers kept ratcheting up her hours. So in October, daughter told them that she had to stick to the original 8 hours a week, but would be willing for the last two weeks in October to work extra hours to help train any new hire.

They fired her on the spot. The remaining three employees were then stuck with covering the 8 hours that she WOULD have worked, and no new person was hired. Predictably, one of the three was also a high school senior and also quit right before high season.

If the employer had been flexible and willing to bring a fourth person on, they would have had their work force in place.

When I read the story, I thought it was going to say no nail polish because years ago, I think some restaurants required that, but saying navy wasn’t acceptable but pastel colors are? Saying braids aren’t acceptable when that would help keep hair out of food? I am making assumptions, but those sound like comments that aren’t based on standard written dress code. If she had been given a written dress code ahead of time and the manager professionally pointed out only pastel colored nail polish, no more than 2 piercings and no braids are allowed and she had 3 dress code violations that needed to be corrected, then I don’t believe WMH would have written about it. At the point in the hiring process that the dress code was shared, just like our written leases where tenants can choose to follow or pick somewhere else to live, a prospective employee could choose to comply or find a new job. One of the differences between the employers and us is the managers probably don’t own the business and therefore aren’t making the decisions like we do. We make our decisions based on fair housing laws, what the current market is like, how compromising on qualifications vs staying empty would do to our business, do you want to be right or rich, etc. We are all heavily invested in what we do. Many managers of restaurants and retail are not typically that invested therefore nit thinking about the consequences to their actions. --75.67.xxx.xxx

My advice to her: Stick it out a couple more months, abiding by his rules, and smile as you go home each day with the TIPS. Take mental notes on his good vs bad management skills. Ask yourself WHY are these things said & done? It will help you be a better supervisor of others one day. --68.229.xxx.xxx

I SO agree with the idea that employers are being silly if not outright stupid!

A friend is about 66, and her job laid her off (due to business downturn) at the end of 2020. She isn't ready to retire. Well, she interviewed with a company that is a major competitor to the one that laid her off... they offered her the job, but at entry level of $17/hour with no performance bonuses. Note she has been doing that job since the 1980s. In her last position, she was making over $80K, if not closer to $100K per year.

She flat turned them down. No reason to let herself be abused in that way for that pay. Recently, the job that laid her off called and asked if she could come back. Business had picked up and they needed her again. She didn't get the vacation time that she had on the books when they downsized her, but they put her back at the same pay as when she was let go. While they didn't give her the accrued vacation, the boss is working with her on giving her the time off for the trips she already had planned.

So yeah, I agree. MANY employers are being stupid.

In many cases, the reason jobs are going unfilled is because the employers are offering such low pay, that there isn't a reason to take the job. --149.76.xxx.xx

Adapt and tough it out. Learn to ompromise for the good income. Is it really THAT hard to follow the rules??

A great learning experience. There will be tougher challenges.

Second: Teaching?? a super smart girl should find a better paying profession. She'll get even more harassment from parents and administrators.

Get her out and about to see other professions.

Get her to a Career psychologist. I sent over 50 kids to a local guy. He tests them and advises career choices based on current trends.

Example: Daughter 20,000 wanted to be a teacher or nurse. (Most students head toward teaching became that's the only profession they see on a daily basis.)

Psych doc said "No way! You'll die. You are an order GIVER, not an order TAKER. HUGE difference. Be the Doctor, not the nurse."

In MY case Be the owner/boss, not the employee.

(I did a good job for my employers but it was a challenge to bite my lip when they came out with silly rules. FREEDOM!!! is soooo sweet!)

I’m thinking along same lines as Small Taters. The braids thing gets a lot of managers in trouble. Retail management is a very high turnover business. Good managers go on to other things, just like good staff go on to other things, OR stay out there on the frontlines earning the good tips. Likely this young manager has some personal issues to work out. I had a boss that kept wanting me to coach an employee because she wore a a scarf like a headband in her hair. Not a bandana, but a nice woman’s fashion scarf. The ends of the scarf came down past her hair, landing below her shoulders. My manager just had a problem with this employee, and was looking to get rid of her. She was one of my best workers! And customers loved her. Store manager discovered her worth when he worked a certain day of the week. This employee was fluent in several languages, including American Sign. Store manager wondered why I was leaving a whole line of people in her checkout lane. It was because they were all deaf, came together in a group, just so they could shop where someone could speak to them!

My boss who was nit-picking about the scarf was let go not long after. He’d had a bad habit of thinking the employees were the problem. ( and I pointed out to him a model in our store signage wearing an even longer scarf at the times he brought up the employee’s hair accessory.)

I say, stick it out for the income, focus on December. --172.56.xx.xxx

HOWEVER after that the competition changes now everything is in play - voice, appearance, style, mannerisms, etc. As visual becomes a part of the judge's decision to keep or select over another singer. ANyway perhaps they are just not as busy now and are doing some selection based on comparison. Anyways just sharing. It's tough out there. I feel for her, seems unfair and unjust.
