Anybody here like to use a french cleat for hanging kitchen cabinets?

Do you use 3/4" common board or thick plywood?

Or something else?

Which is stronger?

I've used 1/2" cabinet grade plywood as well as the ready made metal ones to hang heavy pictures, mirrors, etc. I've never found the need to use them for hanging cabinets as all of the cabinets that I buy have built in reinforced backers to run my cabinet screws (GRK Fasteners#8 x 2-3/4 in. I don't think I've found anything stronger than plywood. --73.25.xx.xxx

use plywood. French cleats are great. I don't usually use them to hang cabinets, but I have. --172.58.xxx.xxx

It can make the install easier, but I think it's overkill. What IS helpful is screwing a cleat underneath to rest the uppers on while you're screwing them into the wall. Provides support and leveling at the same time. Your back will thank you. --104.230.xxx.xx

DJ,

We cut out the drywall behind what will be the top edge of the new cabinets and install 1/2" plywood in it's place.

Now we can put screws anywhere thru the top edge of the cabinets and hit "meat". No more juggling trying to hit studs.

I DO have some 1950's metal cabinets that have built in cleats.
