I've just learned about this gizmo fairly recently, and would like to incorporate it in all renovations going forward - IF IT REALLY WORKS RELIABLY.

Who has experience with a pop-up pressure relief sewer cleanout? It's supposed to open under pressure, to let a sewer backup drain outside instead of backing up into the house.

As a plumber I've provided clients these "Sewer Relief Plugs" so sewerage backups will be diverted though a loaded cleanout caps, instead of flooding up a shower, sink or toilet drain.

In most City's it is illegal to discharge sewerage onto the street. So I only installed Sewer Relief Plugs in area's where there dirt/grass.

I also put an large empty plant pots to collect solids and allow fluids to drain out. thru drilled holes with 1/4" mesh screening.

So Robert - in your experience, they DO work?

Where they are allowed, of course.

Please explain the flower pot thing more. Do you bury it below the plug?

How does that work / help? --68.229.xxx.xxx

on 63 houses i use them all the time and yes they do work. 3 and 4 inch type. I use them on slabs where the pipe clean out come out the back of the foundation-- uually a 3 inch. the ones in the ground are 4 inch. Just unscrew the plug cap and put the pop up in it's place.

100% reliable.

These are a great way to monitor your septic tanks. When the sludge pops the top, it's time to either clean the filter orpump the tank. A much more eligant solution that waiting for sludge to come up through the shower base.

I've installed about 10 so far, and will put them on all properties with septic tanks.

DJ (VA) Yes the work "most" of the time. Sometimes paper towels or toilet wipes will block the clean out temporarily if they are located near to the offending toilet.

I get phone calls from tenants saying, "I was walking down the side of the building and I saw:

water leaking from a pipe

dirty smelly water with bits of paper on the walk way

or the toilets and drains are going down slowly

all meaning that the sewer line is clogged and water is being released through the clean out caps.

Most of my buildings are on a raised foundation. And the rear clean out is high up in the crawl space and exits the building around 3 feet from the ground. So I buy a 18" plastic plant pot, cylinder shape. I drill holes using my hole saw around 1" in diameter around the pot at different levels. I install 1/4" galvanized mesh screen inside the pot and glue it to the walls. So when the cleanout opens and stuff falls out into the pot, only fluids and small tiny stuff is released through the pot screens and the plant pot is holding waste, paper, poop, etc. --47.155.xx.xxx

If you are going to put in the pop up, I would also install a check valve at the same time.

Some places have them and others do not. You don't want that bad rain storm to come and learn out the hard way you don't have one --24.101.xxx.xxx
