I thought anyone buying or potentially renting a place could call the utility companies and get basic information like what the highest bill has been, what is the average monthly bill and what is the monthly budget amount for a particular unit.

Well today I called our local electric company and they refused to provide that information. I called and the Pennsylvania Utilities commission and they never heard of this law.

This is what I was told when I was a realtor but I had never tried to prove a point until today. Let me know what say you.

I would think you could NOT ask for this info. It's private. If you asked that question about MY HOUSE, it varies WILDLY from year to year depending on who the tenant downstairs is (the account is in their name for just that reason.) I would not want someone to be able to call and ask for an average bill because there is no such thing as an average bill. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Duke Energy here will tell you monthly electric average, likely because that's what they want you to pay. --216.23.xxx.xx

I just called utilities today to switch them into my name at the house I'm buying Tuesday.

They won't even tell me whether a Stop-service has been requested yet by the seller. --68.229.xxx.xxx

Unless something has changed, you can get the highest winter bill and summer bill or lowest. No personal information just basic as you say. --73.120.xx.xxx

Xcel used to provide that service (average usage) but I'm guessing some ambulance chasing lawyer caused a problem so they won't do it anymore citing privacy concerns. --209.16.xx.xxx

Better to separate out all utilities where never include any utility with rent as the consumption will be very high. When a tenant pays for a utility it belongs to them where they are going to conserve energy. --99.236.xxx.xxx

If a house is using a natural gas stove, dryer and demand water heater then cost of electricity is lot less as most jurisdictions electricity costs are expensive. The largest part of a utility bill is using electricity for heating anything. If want reduce electrical consumption dramatically then convert stove, dryer and water heater to demand water heater where only using air conditioning will be expensive in the summer. A lot also depends on the insulation level of the house where a poorly insulated house the furnace will have work longer to heat the house in the winter then electrical and natural gas consumption will higher. --99.236.xxx.xxx

Ask the owner to provide copies. That's where the law is, a part of seller disclosure. --108.69.xxx.xxx

The problem with gas appliances is that sometimes Ts want to fix them. Had a guy who decided to fix a gas stove, disconnected some parts, then lit a cigarette. Kaboom! His eyebrows and much of his hair burned off. Electric is more idiot proof. --68.7.xx.xxx
