Of ships? I believe Stevedore's pay is around 50K a year and Longshoremen make 50-100k a year,

Better than sitting at home and esp now some of the government money has stopped or greatly reduced..

Is it just that the work ethic has permanently changed so much from receiving that last year? Do they (and other worker) just expect that more will have to come to them?

Lots of ships sitting at sea,..and BTW that is really expensive for shippers.

I remember when I was home from college in summer I had a job working as a ship inspector at the port of Albany. Sometimes a ship wouldn't pass ,mostly unclean to transport grain.

So the crew had to clean it. Often made a half hearted attempt and not nearly as well done as it should be.

A number of times the Captain would invite me to his office for "coffee". he would have the papers to sign to release the ship. and next to it a big stack of bills,..Then he would walk away or just turn his back,.the point was to sign the papers and take the money.

As a young college kid, it was tempting but I've always been a bit to moral or nervous to steal.

Anyway as I remember it cost 3,000 a day to park at the dock,.That was over 40 years ago,..what would that be in today's money?

I used to work on Galveston Island at a museum. We had a very heavy display that needed moving from Point A to Point B without totally taking it apart, so we obtained the services of about 10-12 stevedores. It was interesting, because I learned they did most of their work at night-- their day was pretty much over by (8? 9? 10? am) because it got too hot.

It was definitely not easy work. But they were awesome people with a good attitude to overcome the challenges posed by inanimate objects. :)

I don't know anything about shipping. But if the actual grunt labor gets paid $50-$100k... they earn it, for sure. --137.118.xx.xxx

Issue is: not enough truck drivers nor trains.

They can unload it, but if the box doesn't leave the shipping yard... where do you stock the next container?

Another side issue: when one of the ships come in, they can have 18,000 containers on it. 20 yrs ago, it was probably closer to 10,000.

In a nutshell, need more people working than playing PS4 or on the internet ;) --76.77.xxx.xxx

It's mostly a trucking issue. There are no truck drivers to drive the containers away from the port.

My son drives a tanker truck and about 30% of the tanker trucks sit idle because there is no one to drive them. Almost all of the tanker drivers are approaching retirement with no young replacements coming up behind them.

The job pays $38 an hour plus full benefits and retirement funds. I don't think the problem is not enough pay offered. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Last week I saw on the nightly news that they were training 18 year old girls to operate 18 wheelers!

They had them practicing driving simulators.

So I was talking to an older women and said something like I didn't think an 18 year old girl had enough life experiences to handle a job like that and was chastised by her saying. "Hey! during the war we young woman were put to work driving trucks and different heavy machinery and we did OK"

Then a friend of mine told me that today unlike the older days where you had to shift 18 gears ,.that today you push a button to "D"

That if they can make a turn OK,.its a large part of their training,..

So you may see more sweet young things out on our highways.

Shipping containers 14 months ago rented at $200.00 for a thirty day period. A container could easily be loaded sent to dockside, and loaded to a ship. The ship then goes to sea and ten to twelve days later docks and is unloaded and delivered for opening and unloading for release to the rental agency for a new lease period.

Today it is still the same procedure but now the containers sit on ships, in ports, in rail yards much longer causing the lowering of available containers. The cost to lease a container today for sea worthy transport? $20,000 for thirty days and typical leases are for sixty day periods with extra costs should the lease need to be extended.

Jim you almost got there, almost so I will help you. Container ships can't port because there are not enough personnel to unload them, not enough space to store them and not enough distribution capacity. This demand has been rising since June. Unemployement benefits have been reducing since June. 2 out of 3 of those conditions require labor. Now if people are not coming back to jobs in the 4 intervening months it's pretty simple, give them an incentive to do so. Money talks BS walks, just like a $200 vs a $20K shipping container. Just because you and most of corporate murica thinks it was going to work on the old pay scale maybe people that actually do the work don't think so. Since they have had since June to start planning for this demand (happens every year) my guess is someone took a gamble and lost. Venezuela has nothing to do with poor planning in a capitalistic market. --74.215.xx.xxx

The more I watch the scamdemic unfold, it sure does seem like the perfect plan (scamdemic) for how to get the plebs to absorb a greatly collapsed dollar. Rock the boat on everything, shut it down. Restart it by everything being more expensive, labor and goods, housing, fuel, everything across the board. Perfect way to absorb all those trillions. Of course it does happen under normal conditions, but this needed to take place at an accelerated rate for some reason. Time will tell. All pieces to a puzzle. --24.152.xxx.xx

I can't seem to find a way to call this poor planning in a capitalistic market.

That poor planning would have to be on a global scale.

Instead - I am seeing multiple bottlenecks. In a global market place there are just so many things that can go wrong and dealing with only one issue all buy itself, doesn't solve the entire puzzle.

Part of this is also the media. A container ship full of last years toys has to get off loaded somewhere and somewhere it will be offered for sale.

So 2021 hot Christmas item just might be Beanie Babies from 2000. They were lost on a ship and recently found and now are on Sale! We can just call them Trolls version #5. --24.101.xxx.xxx
