With friends like this...

Who needs enemies? An old saying came home to me this a.m. Phone rang, I recognized the number/name of a person (elderly lady) recently evicted by a "friend" of mine that had been calling me asking for advice! This lady was looking for a place to rent, said that her landlord (husband of my friend) told her to call me!!?? WTH? While I was telling the lady that I didn't have anything right now, caller ID pops up to show my friends number so I'm thinking, she's trying to warn me about it.

Oh heck no, she left a message saying since you have so many turnovers coming up I thought you might rent something to her!

Say what? I was furious. And also incredulous that she would even do such a thing. She had complained to me repeatedly that the woman was evil, a liar, and just plain mean.

She had taken my advice and gotten a lawyer, gone to court the second time, gotten a judgement and then given the woman 30 more days to get out instead of taking possession. I guess she realizes now what a mistake she made. This woman had housing due to her husband's farm labor & when he died, she insisted on continuing to pay 300. 00 a month instead of the market 700. Since she has no one to help her but an invalid son & his wife, I told my friend the woman belongs in assisted living facility but she has a house full of junk and doesn't want to lose it. Pitiful, yes, but not my problem and not going to be. I've made enough mistakes of my own this year, and have reached my limit. --71.219.xx.xxx

Well, you have more insight on the mindset of the husband of your friend or perhaps even your friend. It could be flattering that they thought that were smart and strong enough to stand up to the woman. You gave them steps on how to navigate the maze of a difficult eviction.

When you boot someone it's always easier if they have a place to go and move their stuff to. It spares the Sheriff lock out. They were using you to dump her. At least you learned what good friends they were in only one phone call.

In Busy's vein. I have a first cousin as cheap as her mother. Saying a lot. Some years ago my mother mentioned that cousin and her hubby were coming to visit and my mother had told her she could pick some tomatoes from my garden. I was on vacation the week after and I was planning on canning about 40 quarts of tomatoes. I was kind of unhappy because it was my garden, not my mothers. They were to come at 10am as I worked third and that gave me time for a nap. For some reason I got up at 8am and when I looked out the kitchen window(cousin came at 7 not 10) they had their rears in the air harvesting my garden. They pulled up their long bed truck with bushel baskets and 5 gallon bags and took everything they could pick. About 35-40 bushels of produce.

She got 45 quarts of tomatoes out of the picking and did not even seem aware she had done anything bad. Your friend is maybe just as oblivious.

I learned a long time ago that references from friends and relatives are worthless. They have no idea how to pick a tenant.

You friend needed help getting rid of this deadbeat and thought that the way to get help was to go to her friends.

I don't know if they don't care that they screw their friends over or they don't realize what they are doing. Self-centered what is easiest for them.

Now you know that this friend of yours can not be trusted any further than perhaps meeting elsewhere for the occasional coffee... which you will probably get stuck with the bill for.

I do not think this friend was trying to "get you". She just wasn't thinking from your side of things. She had a tenant leaving that needed a place. You have a place. She didn't dig deeper in her processing than that.

As for Lana, if we had all been little birds on the shoulders, I bet we'd see this differently. Your mom told the cousins they could have tomatoes. Your mom told you she told them they could have tomatoes. You have no idea how your mom phrased it or how the cousin interpreted it ... because you didn't speak up. You didn't tell your mom or the cousins to wait until you took what you wanted. You saw them getting tomatoes and said nothing.
