I have some concrete steps that are in pretty good shape except for the edge on a few of them

it has crumbled,.a few years ago I repaired it with reg concrete mix but last year it really deteriorated,..I see products that say they help bond the new concrete to the old. I'm also wondering what is the best type of product (conrete) to use to repair I once used TOP N BOND concrete but it was much lighter in color and didn't look too good (I guess I could always paint the steeps but I wanted to avoid that... --66.30.xx.xxx

I use concrete bond liquid successfully to even out cracks in concrete sidewalk but i have not used it on steps. You may be better having a company come and rescribe the edge. --172.58.xx.xxx

I am thinking after acid etching you would use the fine grit mortar, be sure the water can drain away from the step surface. --76.188.xxx.xxx

There are special concrete patches products that bond the new over old concrete. Also after it dries, you can take a concrete diamond grinding wheel and shape the step to a rounded edge. --47.155.xx.xxx

If it is chipped off/broken off at an angle, you must "square it up" so there is a flat surface to take the load of someone stepping on it. Having a vertical or angled surface only will fail; you cannot depend on just the glue bonding effect. What's more, this failure will be when someone steps on it, most likely causing a fall and injury. Imagine the jury hearing how the cheap landlord tried to glue the step together rather than fixing it right! --70.90.xx.xxx

We are located in the snow belt so many times rock salt eats the steps.

Wooden steps laid over the concrete work nice if you can't repair them --24.101.xxx.xxx

A couple of things I've done.

--Mix portland cement with water to the consistency of latex paint. Wet the cement edge, then paint with the cement "paint", then pour the concrete. It bonds like magic.

--if you want the new concrete to blend with the old, mix up another batch of Portland cement "paint" but throw in a handful of dirt from nearby. Paint the entire step after the concrete has hardened (same day).

--after the cement has cured (not hardened, CURED...we're talking weeks here), seal it. This prevents water intrusion, limits chemical leaching, and really prolongs the life.
