Big problem here,..I have called around 30 people to do a small bathroom floor. Of the few that returned my call, (all went to voice mail) said "maybe" after the first of the year.

So our city;s school system and I understand had the governor activate the National Guard and they have deployed 250 guard members to be bus drivers as this year very few of the regular drivers have returned.

Signs all over shops looking for help. Some say it has been because of the government money that people didn't want to work. They predicted now that it has ended last week we would see more people wanting to/needed to go back to work, but others have pointed out that other states have ended their payouts months ago and there have been little return to work.

I wonder if the American work ethic has forever changed. --66.30.xx.xxx

You are not imagining it...a BBQ restaurant here in town that has been around forever had to shut its doors for good last week because they can't get workers. There were down to only 4 staff. It was in the local news.

I'm not sure what is going on -- I thought the extra UE benefits had expired? What are all these people doing who are not working?

Same situation here in central VA. I've seen several restaurants around here in the last several months that have closed permanently for the same reason. Some tried to keep going with the few people who would work, but those people eventually burned out, having to work an ungodly amount of hours trying to keep up. And my husband has a small remodeling company. He cannot find new workers, even for fairly big money. I'm not sure how these "unemployed" folks are making it. You'd think eventually people would get hungry and have to work. --108.4.xxx.x

I think a lot of it may have to do with employers requiring vaccines. Also there is still the child tax credit. There are probably some people that became self employed or work online now. --73.120.xx.xxx

Here in Los Angeles there are flooring companies that cater to landlords. One such company has a set price per bathroom or kitchen floor, depending if your using the lousy vinyl floor or more more if you use an upgrade non ripe 10 year guaranteed. Extra if the old floor is removed and leveling needed. Good prices. Their installers, 10 teams, sometimes only have half a days work and would love a few small jobs.

Look for one of those companies -- landlord freindly. --47.155.xx.xxx

My mother has end stage dementia and was on hospice for 15 months. She was largely bedbound and I tried stopping her medicines to see if it would help as her BP med is not good for demented folk. She got a lot better, but still declining. She did not decline fast enough for hospice and they booted her on June 25 this year. Since, I have hired two home health agencies to help me care for her. Each one has gone through 4 aides with the longest lasting 4 days. Most recent lasted 3 days and most weeks they cannot find anyone. Very frustrating time. --216.23.xxx.xx

Is it at all possible that C-19 was used just a tad to effectively raise min wage to $15 by providing the federal kicker? Around here, if you had a min wage job (just above $7) , you were get $15.30 to do nothing.

One out of every 500 Americans or 670,000+ have died. It’s possible one was a flooring contractor or handyman. I’m sure many of them were bus drivers too. Time to diy it! --71.211.xxx.x

C19 deaths have been greatly inflated. But I digress. Listening in on a recent bankruptcy hearing, a lot of the under 35 set have simply moved back in with their parents as opposed to taking 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet as was common in my day. --174.212.xxx.xx

In the opening post, it was asked "I wonder if the American work ethic has forever changed." - Answer is yes.... Many young Americans have absolutely no idea what it is to work or how to work. Many were enabled by their parents.

When we hire the GenZ types, they will spend much of their time doing nothing when not supervised.

As for older workers in the lower income brackets, they are taking advantage of living rent free thanks to the socialist government we are turning into.

Wait until AOC runs and becomes president and YOU will see the worst that socialism can offer us. Hopefully Bernie Sanders will be dead of old age when this happens because he is another p.o.s. --69.121.xxx.xxx

The latest: she is calling for the release of *all* inmates at Rikers. Who can take this seriously? --72.188.xxx.xxx

The bus driver shortage makes sense. Most drivers are older and may be afraid of Covid. Also last year was a fiasco with schools in and out of session numerous times. It may happen again this year.

Beyond that it's a huge problem here. Grocery stores no longer open 24 hours and lots of places closing early or opening later.

I have a 16 year old and kids don't work anymore. Too busy with activities. --174.53.xxx.xxx
