I usually prefer to solve problems as well as possible so I can be fairly confident that I won't be dealing with the same problem for a long time.

Well, not this time. I wasn't optimistic but I was lazy so I tried the cheap, fast solution and it actually worked. There are probably only a few situations where it will work well but I used that flexible thin plastic hair clog remover with the sharp edges to grab the hair clog and my bathroom sink drain at home is running really fast again.

Normally I would want to take the trap off under the sink and clean everything really well but I gave this thing a try and got lucky.

Anybody else ever had success using one of these things???

Have not had success with one of those. But recently had to use a large paperclip that worked, along with a scissors. --176.113.xx.xxx

We used one of those long ones with the "barbs" to try to clean out a birds nest in the dryer vent at our condo at the beach. The vent runs the whole length of the inside wall.

We got as much as we could out using a vacuum and that thing.

Then we put a cover over the outside outlet to prevent any more access. So they are good for other uses as well. --71.219.xx.xxx

Yes; I usually have good success with these type of products in removing hair (dog or human) from bathtub drains. --73.108.xxx.xxx

I use those at every turnover or at least try to remember to and at home. It usually does a decent job. If not my plumber gets called. --75.67.xxx.xxx

As an alternative to the plastic stick with barbs, you may want to try using your shop vac to suck out whatever it can. I used mine on a vanity sink drain and all kinds of debris (toothpaste caps, etc.) came out the P-trap and that drain flowed freely again. Remove the paper filter from your shop vac first though. --68.63.xxx.xxx

The drain zip-it tool, there is one on every water heater and in the brrom closet of every place I ever managed until taken away at move-away time, they were 80 cents in 25 quantity from someone Ernie knew at landlord locks. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Worked when the vacuum didn’t work on one of our vanities. Between the two can probably get most every clog.

I use zip its and love them. If you have just a shower drain with holes and not the contraption that opens and closes, it probably won't fit. I found on amazon a thing like a tiny bottle brush to use and it works to pull the hair to the drain plate EXCEPT if it's a lot you can't pull it out. You need to have scissors there to cut off what does pull out above the drain plate. Two or three regrabs and snips and it all comes out ... gross, but it's gone. --98.237.xxx.xx

What surprised was that I was able to find one that was thin enough to fit into the sink drain without needing to remove the pop-up stopper. Both Lowes and Home Depot had one that was thin enough to work.

I've had good luck with the "Zip-It" type plastic barbed tool, both in rentals and in my personal home. It's cheap and effective in many cases. We try to use them at turnovers. --73.148.x.xx

dino,

Love those Zip It tools. Also like the one with the tiny brush on the end.

We put one under every kitchen sink. Waay cheaper than a service call or even MY time to take a phone message.

Maybe the bath sink is more appropriate.

But I DO like Vee’s idea of hanging it on the water heater. More visible.

We use the Zip it, it works well.

But we follow up with Thrift. It can only be purchased at wholesale plumbing stores. It's crystals you pour down the drain after heating the drain with hot water.

The heat activates the crystals and eats hair within a few seconds.

It's mean stuff if you get it on your hands... be careful. But cheap and very effective. --158.115.xxx.xxx

I personally like using a metal coat hanger with hook bent on the end. I also like using the union traps so that it is easier to clean out. I got a call a couple weeks ago for a flood, the cause was from the bathroom sink. Th kid left the water running and sink backed up. I pulled out several hair extensions, a toilet paper holder among other things. I also had this tenant clean and mop up the bathroom below it that got flooded. --71.184.xxx.xx

PS

If I notice long hair on the new residents (guys and gals) I emphasize the ZipIt tool.
