The rear windows on the building I had pointed are pella replacement windows and they were installed from the inside and the installer (before my time) left the old storm frame and wood trim in place. Some of the wood is deteriorated, and I thought it shouls come off. The mason thought nothing else is holding the replacement windows in. We determined it was best to leave the old wood in place and wrap it all in aluminum . We talked about caulking the cladding when the windows were wrapped. I went to look at the job and they were not caulked.
Question- when you have windows clad in aluminum are they caulked or not?

When windows get wrapped, there is typically a little bit of caulking at the line where a V is created. Caulking isn't wide spread --24.101.xxx.xxx |

Window World caulked mine.
Important that it is NOT caulked at the very bottom. I believe this piece is called the apron…? Anyway, the bottom is left uncaulked so any moisture that does find its way underneath can escape. --70.92.xxx.xxx |

All of the aluminum windows we had installed were caulked after installing the windows and wrapping with aluminum. We've had 5 companies through the years do the jobs.
BUSY: every installer caulked the very bottom. They were all well known reputable companies, so now you have me curious.
SMALL: you do need the old wood there to hold the aluminum. When my brother in law sided his house and aluminized his windows he added another layer of wood on top so the windows would be proud of the siding. --176.113.xx.xxx |

Caulking should be applied as a water seal to each side of the wrap, bricks or siding seal and the seals between the 4 segments of the wrap - or cap, then to the building material - all to seal against wind and rain. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

Thanks for the feedback, the mason is going to have his guy caulk the cladding. I'll make sure they don't seal up the bottom of anything so water can drain. --24.194.xxx.xxx |
